Hi All, I am about to start cutting into my old Fairlane to mig weld in some rust repairs. While i have had plenty of experience welding various gauges of metal i haven't welded on a car before. I figured disconnecting and removing the battery would protect the electricals but someone has said that i should disconnect the altenator as well. Can anyone give me some advice in this area? Thanks

I think its a good precaution against stray currents and only takes a few minutes. I alwys do but I don't know the official position, only protecting the hip pocket.

Thanks John, What about the fuel tank? it has a cap and doesn't smell so i assume its leak free. Is it OK to leave this in the vehicle?

It depends where you are welding. If near the tank you could accidentally touch the tank with the arc and that could be trouble, tank metal is relatively thick but would not take too much to burn through. If near the filler the fumes could ignite, and eve
