Hi, I have a 289 Windsor and went to put a water pump on the other day and it would not fit, a mate said I had probably got a Cleveland one by mistake but the shop said it was a Windsor, was there 2 types of 289 Windsor, I think mine is a early 64 fairlane. Any ideas?

There were indeed two types of 289. The first was pretty much the same block as the 221 & 260 V8's the second essentially the same as a 302W.

The blocks differ in the bell housing pattern and my fuzzy memory says that the 260 type had a 5 bolt bell housing whereas the "Windsor" type block had a 6 bolt bell housing pattern.

Have a look see for a 260 water pump and see if it is closer to what you need because I honestly can't tell you whether they are different to the later water pumps. I also believe that you can bolt a Cleveland pump onto a Windsor but more on that later.

To my knowledge there are three types of water pump that bolt to a 289-302W. The XR-XT type has the bottom hose on the drivers side of the car then the XW - XY type has it o the passenger side (same as Cleveland). You then have the later "reverse rotation" pumps that go onto serpentine belt driven 302's found in EB - AU 5.0's. The impeller on these turns the opposite way to the crankshaft.

If your 289 came from a 64 Compact Fairlane then it is almost certain that you have a "260" type engine.

This guy lists the water pump that I think you need:

& also has the 289/302W type as a different listing.

HTH, Jim...
