Hi all
I have an XG XR6 1995 Ute that needs a new radiator that has a slightly burst seam in the plastic.
It has also run a bit hot for a while and havent been able to work out why so I am guessing the radiator has some blocks, although the water seems to run nice and fast when looking in the overflow.
Anyway, I am able to get some EL Thermo fans, and have been told these should make it run cooler anyway and of course much quieter.

As such I was wondering what option is better:
1. Replace the Radiator with one for an XG (Chinese but with copper core for $190) 32mm thick single core or two core.... Then modify the EL thermo fans to fit.
2. Replace the Radiator with one for an EL (There is 52mm Full Aluminium available for around the same price?? otherwise it seems EL radiators are 26mm thick??)

If anyone has experience in either or both of these mods, can you let me know how easy the EL radiator mod into XG or the EL fan mod onto XG Radiator would be?

Any good experiences on replacement radiators would also be helpful.

Cheers

Hello,
I don't know what the XG radiator is like however I can say that the main differences between an EA/EB/ED radiator and an EF/EL radiator are that the EF and EL radiators have mounts for the thermo fans although I have never had a problem fitting EF/EL fans to an EB/ED radiator using the shroud mounts.

The other difference is that the bottom hose outlet is far smaller on an EF/EL radiator and that the hose connector going to the reservoir bottle is an elbow whereas it points straight out of an EA-ED radiator.

The other issue that you may have is the physical dimensions of the XG radiator compared to the E series radiator. I would guess that the XG radiator is taller but could be wrong there.

Hi Jim
The XG Radiator is a core of 635x415x32mm. Centre to Centre of top nuts is 804mm, I think the El is about 30mm wider for the centre to centre.
The core of an EL radiator is wider at 702mm I think.
Anyway... rather than moving the top brackets and jiggling whatever hoses etc I would need to and blocking off the centre connection on and EL radiator, I have decided to go the XG radiator and then modify some EL thermo fans to suit.
Have found there are a few tutorials on doing the thermal fan mod.

Thanks

IF the XG radiator is taller and narrower than an EF/EL radiator (which is the same size as an EA/EB/ED radiator BTW) then you might do better looking at a set of AU/BA/BF fans as they have a taller and narrower radiator than an E series, the fans are easier (read cheaper) to get and they are obviously newer so likely in better condition.

I may be able to measure my EB radiator, My EF radiator and my AU fans if I can find them.

Hi Jim
Thanks again. The XG is same height but is narrow. In hindsight I expect you are correct about an AU radiator, however, already committed to an EL at local wreckers. Cost me $44 so not too bad.
No doubt the XG radiator I am getting will not have mounts so will have to see what I can do when it it all arrives.
I will post back once I have worked out how to put it all together.
I was thinking of replacing my water pump. Upon removing it, it has the slightest play in it only and although brown inside, cannot see any flakes of rust, just a little on the outside of pipe where the hose sits. It is also the internal cast iron impeller type. When it was running, there was clearly a lot of water being visibly pushed through the overflow container. I guess these cast iron impeller types are much better than the newer vane types? From your experience are these any better than the vane types for longevity, performance and corrosion?

Cheers
