Guys I'm making the most of my holidays, I need to take the AC box out, and I have a feeling this just might take up alot of time in my holidays, yeehaa!!! lol, anyway I have the factory air fitted (in the dash) not fitted infront of the passangers knees (dealer fitted)
I need to remove the AC Box to make modifications to the box to fit an EB AC fan,
To remove the box do I have to remove the intire dash? I'm thinking when the heater coil or fan needs replacing they don't remove the whole dash to remove the AC box,,,right???
Some of you may think it could be a bit silly to put the EB fan in a XB but the EB fan is a good fan and they work well, they blow on 4 speeds and I have tried to find another fan to fit the XB but only wreckers have them and they are half worn out, they want to charge an arm and a leg for a little unit, however the stock fan (the box without AC) is different and the EB fan is the closest to the XB AC fan,
I will give details on how the operation goes just in case if anyone is interested in doing the same project to better the flow of AC through out the car, "fingers crossed" if it works - WELL IT'S GUNNA BE COOL!!! :-)

I can't help you with the dash question, but I can tell you that VN-VS commodores need the whole dash & HVAC box removed to get the fan out, as it faces the firewall, so I wouldn't be too quick to assume manufacturers would think of the maintenance aspect.

The fan speed is controlled by the switch & resistors. You'll find the fan only has 2 wires - the resistors are switched in & out of circuit by the fan speed switch, and drop the current going to the fan to slow it down. Putting 12V onto it will run it the same as on high speed. I'm sure the EB fan will be more efficient in t's blade design as well, so you're obtaining a good benefit.
If you're going to the effort of all this, maybe the fully variable fan speed arrangement like the late model fords (BA/BF) have would be a worthwhile option?
Cheers,

Mick

Hi Commodorenut you have a valid point and I think you could be right, they don't manufacture a car for easy maintenance, I guess if you ask a mechanic I guess their eyeballs would roll to the back of their head, so silly me for assuming,
I spoke to a sparky and he said "we may put in another switch else where to have a variable speed control ( 4 speed), but it will still give it full power to the motor", but as for the BA and BF's,,, well I'm not too sure as I take it in trust that the aircon guy who helped me out before told me that the new Fords are different,I would of preffered to go that way buy he recons the EB is the best fit up, Cheers.

I believe that EB's are a whole dash out job to replace the fan but it's not that bad a job on one of those. XD, XE and XF's needed the dash out to replace the heater element so they were very likely as Mick said to be doing that back with the XB too.

BTW I have removed several EB dashes but never re installed one. I did remove the pedal box from my last EB by partially dismantling the dash and found in hindsight that the job probably would have been quicker and easier to just remove the whole dash in as big a chunk as I could.

Hi Jim, the intire dash is on it's way out,,, slowly,,, and taking notes were it all goes back in reverse, It's a big job when you only have to just replace a heater coil or fan, owell here we go and I have gone so far now i'm not gunna stop now, and see how it all goes and like I said I will give updates on how the EB fan goes into an XB, however on the positive side there are a few things I need to tinker around inside the dash so now is time to see to the problems, Cheers Phill.

Guys the intire dash had to come out and the AC box too, fitting the new fan was straight forward, I had to locate three new holes and put M6 bolts through, the extra plastic piece on the fan that the wiring curls around gut choped off with a hack saw and I was very surprised that the fan fit rather well into the AC box, it spun fast with a trial run attached to the battery and I had to refit the dash, I had to disconnect the AC lines in the engine bay so I have to get it regased, all is back together now and ready for the AC guy to regas the system that is booked in next Tuesday, let you all know how it all goes soon,
Phill.

The system got re-gassed and tested, the fan spins very well and it has variable speeds by selecting it by using the control arms on the dash, the car cools very quick and a mate of mine who has an XA with standard Air conditioning said my system "works very well"
I reconmend this way if you need to replace the fan or to do maintance with this particular Air Conditioning.
I had the AC on the feet for a while and my wife said it's so dam cold that she could almost suffer from frost bite on the toes!
Cheers :-)
