Recently purchased a HK GTS and would like to narrow down the build date.

I have VIN and body tag, but the whole front end has been changed at some point, so other dates stamped on those parts don't match.

body - 30780737KR-00xxx-H5
Stamped on the firewall - HK25401 S(?)

Any help appreciated

Chassis number will be HK25401SS.

I can’t tell you anything with numbers omitted. There is a 900 car gap between Pagewood GTS 00100 and 00999. Although I suspect your car might be 00380 or 00381.

You're right - 381

Do you have any info on the dates (Rough month?), location of build etc?

Pagewood build. Last days of July 1968 or into first few days of August would be my estimate.

Its VIN will be close to 80737KH530475 give or take.

Thanks for the info. Helps tracking down the period correct parts that are now long gone. For refence it's a 307 powerglide car, well purchased under that assumption anyway.

How close was I with the VIN? #382 is a V8 as well. Is yours a banjo or a Salisbury? I think it was from August production that Salisbury became mandatory with V8 auto in GTS

Pretty close with the Vin, 530522. It has a banjo rear end.

It’s PSN is actually higher than #382, which means yours overtook it in the assembly plant, the VIN tag went on right at the end of the assembly process but the chassis number and Body tag went on in the body plant.. which makes me think 382 might have been a manual.

The hole in the firewall for the speedo cable gives mine away as being an auto.

Manual has the same speedo cable hole, all V8 HK had the same extra speedo cable hole. I got that back to front above, #382 actually overtook yours. Its body and chassis number are higher than yours (6 x chassis numbers apart) but yours was delayed or 382 was sped up. It is possible 382 was an auto with banjo but yours was Salisbury maybe? Something delayed yours going through the Assembly Plant, it may be something simple like yours had air or steer or salisbury or even its trim was different and they did a batch of the same trim cars together. #382 is 18Y trim.

Well, that is interesting. Mine is 18Y trim also. Colour is 585-1285. No air or steer that I can see but certainly could have been robbed at some point. I'm sure this was a parts car for something. Definitely a banjo in it and doesn't have the hump in rear floor. Interesting enough it currently has a manual pedal box in it, but I was told that it was swapped out at some stage by someone? The plot thickens.

Pressing ( or absence of one) on the passenger floor side of tunnel will answer your auto v manual question

If you are referring to where the shifter comes through the floor, yes, it has that lump where the console needs to allow for it. If anything, else. please elaborate. Happy to learn more about this vehicle.

They have a pressing in the floor/tunnel interface to clear the shifter linkages for a manual. If it’s a banjo car it won’t be a manual though.

So what date code and numbering would I be looking for to try to get a period correct engine block?

Just get a Pagewood 307. They are always for sale on Gumtree and Marketplace. Lots went into cars.

How will I know it's a Pagewood engine? Most people selling them seem to know little about the engine's origin.

Engine number between 30710000 and 30718000. Obviously early HK pre Monaro/Brougham (12/67 to late 6/67) are the early numbers and the later ones will be HT so somewhere in the middle of that range will work, but it doesn't really matter if its not the original. #382 was just over 13000. If you happen to find 30712689 let me know, its the original out of my car, its around as I saw it for sale with a faked blue HK GTS a few years back.
