HI everyone,

Im a complete rookie when it comes to this so will do my best to explain. I have a 67 Holden HR Special running a 186. The butterfly in the carburetor is not returning to a straight up and down position after it is revved, causing it to run pretty rough. Its coughing soot out the back, and when i accelerate, its really stuttery.

Is this an easy fix and how would i go about it?

Cheers!

you have a 186S engine with a carb with an auto choke?
or
the std 186 engine with a carb with a manual (push it yourself) choke cable?

if the 2nd make sure, when the engine is warmed up, that pushing the cable in completely
opens the choke butterfly. Adjust it if not (or get a mechanic to do that)

if the first, you will need a mechanic or someone with the right skills to adjust the automatic choke

Thanks for that - its a standard 186 with push choke. The choke is a bit knackered to be honest and i dont use it. It doesnt seem to affect the butterfly when i push and pull it.

By butterfly are you are referring to the one lower down, also called the throttle plate, the one that open and closes with the accelerator, or the choke one near the top?.

On one of my carbs the linkage was slipping on the butterfly shaft. So the cable would slide back and forth but the movement of the butterfly wouldn't match. It would stay in one spot until the cable moved about halfway then start to move.
Maybe hold the butterfly in place and see if there is any looseness in the cable. Or hold the cable in place and see if the butterfly will move.

When at idle the throttle butterfly should be in the horizontal position
The choke (top butterfly) will be in the vertical position
From your description it sounds like your choke is stuck on
Put the choke ( top butterfly) in the vertical position and see how you go
