Hi all

Im in the process of building a mild 308 for my HZ. I'm after a nice set of heads, recoed, larger valves etc.

It's a blue 308.

Thing is, all heads that I've seen advertised with everything I'm after, are always red or pre-pollution heads.

Can someone please explain this? Are the blue heads no good for reconditioning and larger valves.?

Thanks

Roy

There are 3 different types of red heads and they are different to your blue 308.

HT/HG are missing the mounting holes at the top front for accessories.
HQ/HJ, LH and early LX have the mounting holes. Both these and the HT/G have no EGR ports in the c

Thanks HK for the reply.

I think youve help make up my mind.

The 308 had a Performer manifold on it, and I was worrying about how the red heads were going to line up with it, legalities for pollution etc etc.

I think I will take the blue heads in

Are you sure about the EGR port shape? I have a set of heads that came with a VB block and the ports are square.
Is running hardened seats an absolute necessity?

James

You only have to be in

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

If the ports are square with 2 x centre bolt holes they are VC, VH, VK, VL or WB (or possibly E,M or S series Bedford). They are definitely not red heads (meaning you have had blue heads all along).

Roy, an older Edelbrock Performer might not be a mult

JBM you mean the engine is a, VB prefix, this is a VK commodore motor.
Not a VB commodore.
Hardend seats? i think they are. unless you want to use valve saver all the time.

James, I missed the hardened seats bit. Yes you need hardened seats of some sort. Pre ULP Holden V8 heads are pretty good compared to others. Ive actually had them last for years on LPG and not recess too bad because the valve guides always wore out first

The biggest telltale is the bolt holes. If it has one thread with a U shaped EGR port under and around it its a red ADR27A head. If there are 2 x holes adjacent to 2 x sides of a square port they are WB-VL heads.

Its "U" shaped with 1 bolt hole in the middle and the lower corners are square, so red pollution as per VB.
