Hi Les, I have a question regarding the repair kit for the wiper arm assemblies for EJ & EH. The kit contains the new steel ball & plastic sockets with the caps to fit the sockets to the appropriate location. Originally, the balls where peened to the arm of the assemblies. Are the replacements to be peened also or are they to be welded in place?

OK, welded the new balls into the wiper arm assembly. Then fitted the new nylon sockets with the metal caps that came with the kit.
In the process, I had a few issues crop up.
Firstly, the new caps, which I believe are chrome plated, lost the plating when folding the 'fingers' to secure the nylon sockets in place. Zinc plating might be more appropriate.
Secondly, the caps, although probably copied from originals, could be improved by making these 'fingers' marginally longer. (maybe only 1 - 2mm)
Thirdly, and more importantly, the nylon sockets & the new balls are not a good fit together. I would suggest that the ball to socket fitment has in the range of 0.5 - 1.0mm 'play' when assembled. Once all fitted back into the car, the end result of 'play' in the actual wiper arms, is in the range of 40mm at the end of the wiper blade.
The wiper pivots in the car have virtually no play at all & don't contribute to this problem of 'play' in the assembly.
I would consider a 'snug' fit of the ball & socket with virtually no play be far more appropriate.
By the end of the job, I achieved nothing when compared to the 46 year old worn units that I replaced.
I believe bigger balls or smaller sockets are required to solve this issue, along with a rethink of the cap design & plating.
Your thoughts Les?
I have mentioned this to Bob P after fitting the kit but have not heard back.

Goodo, thanks for the reply Les. Please let me know when the issue is resolved so that I can refit a set to replace the current ones.
More than happy to have the set I fitted in the car looked at, although I would assume all stock will have the same dimensions. PM if necessary.
Regards, John.

Les / Utlity8

Found your posts after looking on Rare Spares for the pins/clips that connect the RH wiper pivot arm to the main wiper drive arm and the LH/RH cross connector arm (if that makes sense). I couldn't find them on the RS website either individually or as a kit. Are these available?

Thanks

Matt
Continually amazing how people are willing to share information.

Hi Les, speaking of which, how is the replacement of the ball & socket kits going? Are we there yet? I spoke with Bob P at the Euroa show a number of weeks ago & he was unsure of a time frame.
Regards, John.

Hi Les, are you getting any closer to solving the problem with the wiper ball & socket repair kits?

Im Sorry for the delay John

I have just been in to see Bob Pyz about these to see where we are up to

unfortunatly we have had a set back once again, the manufacturer produced us a new batch of 5000 supposedly good sockets and when we received them last week we realised they too were faulty

Neal one of our directors here is leaving tonight to visit the manufacturer overseas (aswell as others) and will be personally sorting this out whilst he is over there, he doesnt get back into the country till the end of the month but hopefully then i can give you a better answer

we hope this is all sorted out this trip and the dramas are over with

Hi John
We have all but given up on the socket manufacturer and it looks like we will make the ball fit the socket instead hopefully we will be back in business by end of June but no promises , this simple part has caused more than enough headaches for us

You have changeover pivot assy's, have you considered changeover ball, socket, arm assy's. The whole lot in one go?
