Why are they a different shape in the ute and vans? The drivers side one goes further back than the left one. It has nothing to do with the fuel filler as it is at the front of the arch. This is heaps more important than some hole in a HQ boot.

VG-VSIII utes were the same, ie one side longer than the other.

Here is my theory, all the steel they cut out of HQ boots got melted down and then had to go somewhere, into ute wheel arches. There, two mysteries solved in one fell swoop.

I didnt realise the commodores were the same, why is this so?

Manufacturing consolidation.

Commodore sedans & wagons have a longer RH wheelwell to accommodate the fuel filler. As the ute is comparitively small in production numbers, it makes sense to maximise the amount of carry-over components, and the wheelwell pressings are just one example of this.

If you look at a VG-VS3 ute fuel tank, its a modified sedan one - another development & manufacturing cost-cutter.

I couldnt say - I dont know enough about them.

I did see under the tray floor of my mates HK ute once, and it looks like the same floor pressing as a HK wagon, so theres a distinct possiblity its been going on for years, however the full chassis under HQ-WB commercials is what makes me wonder if it continued through that era.

Gents digging up an old thread but interested in learned opinions on rear wheel arches, i have just picked up a HQ sedan very rust free and a great shell but someone in its previous life has flared the quarters, i wonder what my options are to replace them would be, i know where there is a WB stato that is getting wrecked or do i use rare spares rust replacements including their dogleg panel or bide my time and find a hq-hz that i can attack, any opinions are valuable, thanks in advance.

HQ sedan has unique quarters. The wheel arches are actually the same for most of HQ-WB, those are listed below but the quarters differ obviously and differ between series in some areas (like tail-lights, quarter lights etc), but the actual wheel arches are the same, in that they will use the same wheel arch moulds and same mudflaps:

All HQ (except cab chassis of course).
HQ-HZ Statesman.
HQ-HX coupe.
HQ-WB van.
HQ-WB ute.

The ones that differ (but are the same as each other) are:

HJ-HZ sedan.
HJ-HZ wagon.
WB Statesman.

I have a beautufl HK GTS coupe shell similarly to yours. Rust free but has flared rear wheel arches. Just how bady flared will depend upon how much steel you need off donor to repair them.
