The L76 and the L98 are essentially the same motor.

Some late VZ utes had the L98 fitted.

L98 differs as it doesnt have displacement-on-demand (DOD) lifters - i.e. it didnt do "Active Fuel Management" (think Holden calls it), it has a bigger sump (i.e. the VZ chassis variant) and no other DOD gear.

L76 has the displacement-on-demand (DOD) lifters fitted and "AFM".

So ... VEs with AFM use the L76.

Visual identification of the L76 is possible. There is a DOD/AFM socket at the rear of the intake with different PCV connections to L98.

There are differences between VZ or VE L98 pans. VZ has a front sump oil pan. VEs have a large rear.

VE engines have the shallow lower profile front accessories drive set up.

If youre thinking of conversion into an early model, also get yourself across the issue of the reluctor wheel. L76 / L98, LS3, LS7 and VE-installed LS2 have the same 58X reluctor wheel. All LS1 and VZ-installed LS2 have a 24X wheel.

Join Australias big blue Ls1 site, plenty of good info and people on there.

Not really sure what it is your saying, but the difference between essentially the same and exactly what you want can cost a bloke time and money best spent elsewhere.
