I have a feeling all of the shadowtone SL/E will be Dandenong build. It is the first time since HT GTS, V8 GTS and GTS350 (Verdoro Green and Monaco Maroon with Persian Gold metallic stripes) that two tone heat cured metallic was applied to a GMH vehicle without a divider strip. I have a feeling that Dandenong had a special paint area for it. Imagine the nightmare of trying to align the joins across the door to guard gaps trying to paint them in the Body Plant - it would have been impossible. Remember Pagewood, Dandenong and Acacia Ridge painted the front panels in the Body Plant with the body, with the panels held off on jigs. Then they were separated to be bought back together in the VAP. To be able to also apply metallic, get it masked for the other colour and then the margins smooth, then clear coated and then baked. What a nightmare. The other times they'd done it in the past were air dried and done later, like the blackouts and stripes, the silver on HT Brougham under the stainless moulds and the gold stripes on HK Brougham.

They were Dandy builds .. says my memory (I was working at Dandy during late VB thru to Early VH)
but no special paint area, as Shadow Tone cars went thru the paint tunnel twice (lighter colour applied
to all the body inc the turret) and went to Rectification after the turret was painted for the stripes
which are a DIFFERENT colour again on VC but this changed for VH where a paint mask method was used for the stripe
.. it was painted as part of applying the dark top colour.

FWIW... VC SLE Shadowtones are reasonably rare, it was only VH that Shadowtone SLEs really took off sales wise

ps.. some trivia
the first advertised VC ShadowTone (and its pic was on VC Owners manuals) was actually a Black over silver
VB SLE that has VC external trim (grille, taillights, badging) fitted. Curiously, this did not happen
with the 4 millionth Commodore.. which was a pre-build VC SLE with Gold over Cream, it actually is a VC!

Were the front panels actually on Commodore when painted at Dandenong? They weren't for Holdens, they were sat in place on brackets and painted, then sent separately to the VAP where they were fitted.

I wonder if the top metallic was an air dry? The normal paint process was:

Electrostatic red lead primer, bake.
Sand primer when still hot.
Apply acrylic when warm/hot. Bake.
Finish later when cooled down (after assembly).

It wouldn't have been easy to setup ready for the second metallic colour whilst the body was still hot.

From VB introduction, Commodores went thru a Galvanic (think that is right) dip or bath BEFORE anything else was applied
after panel assembly (using special hi-strength coated steels in certain places) and yes they were complete .. doors, deck lid, bonnet and guards all on.

Holdens and Statesman had that too. I was just talking about the paint process not the dipping. But it was done in the body plant not the assembly plant. Commodore had to be the same as they were built in the same locations. I knew Commodore used different body jigs, they had metric gaps so the Fischer body jigs couldn't be used (Leo Pruneau confirmed this for me a while back). Interesting that they added the guards and bonnets in the body plant, I wonder how Pagewood managed this as they were not setup to operate that way? They built by far the most VB and VC.
