Hi all,
My son bought himself a Vs 5.0l ute, built 8/98.
I would like some info about the car but there seems to be so much conflicting stuff about the VS utes.
Things I don't know:
1. Final 3 digits of model number on firewall tag is 724, what does that indicate, we are trying to figure out if its an SS/limited edition/whatever or just a 5.0l optioned base model.
2. At some point, someone fitted a VM prefixed engine, presuming that is a roller engine (no MAF fitted though) is there is an easy way to know if its actually got a roller cam (I'm thinking pushrod length is as good as I can get without lifting manifold)
3. Were VM prefix engines ALL roller cammed or could it have been a flat tappet from factory?

You couldn’t get a 5.0L Holden Ute in VS, only S and SS.
VM is the roller cam 179kW engine. They had sequential injection. VN is the 195kW HBD version, not sure if VS got these or just VT. |

A 724 pack is a S model ute with a V8, auto trans. and cruise control. The best ID for a roller cam engine would be the engine number prefix. Dr terry Edited by user Thursday, 20 November 2025 3:44:13 PM(UTC)
