Hi Group,
I appreciate everyone's input to date.

If of interest, I think I've manage to create links for a couple of photos below.

My memory of the VH SS models is that there were different 'categories' ie I, II or III.

The basic 'I' started with a 4.2 litre 4 speed, full dash instruments, criss-cross pattern alloy wheels, no body kit, tweedy looking fabric and I think it had rear seat headrests.

I can't remember what the differences in the II were, but the III had a 5.0 litre, a full body kit, flat-face alloy wheels, sports suspension and a few more luxuries inside.

Most were red although I vaguely remember a white one (maybe someone had it painted though). I wasn't far off getting my licence and tried to pressure my Dad into getting an SS as they started from about $15k so not a huge amount over an SL with a few options. Sadly he bought a 3.3 auto SL. One of my uncles was sales then manager of the local Holden dealership so he drove an SS III demo (previous company cars he had included HQ GTS, an orange SS Torana, HZ Caprice etc - I was very jealous).

From my memory, there was a basic SS and the Groups 1, 2 & 3 were atop of that. With SS and G1&G2 standard with the 4.2, the Groups had slight mods. 5.0 was optional.
All were red until a batch at the end in white.

I believe that is right, or close to.

Yeah. The basic SS was a Holden model & only came with a 4.2 V8. HDT added the Group 1, 2 & 3 which all had the 4.2, with the 5.0 available as an option on the Group 3 only.

I thought the 5.0L was optional on all of them Terry, even the basic XT2?

Yes, my mistake, the basic XV2 did have the 5.0 as an option. The vast majority would've been built as stock orders, not customer orders so most would be 4.2 surely.

correct that !

4.2 V8s rule in all VH models.. GMH or HDT with the 5.0 as an option in all too

just gotta find my copy of the HDT build book to see if this is a VH 'Group car or
just a standard SS with some HDT options (aka enhanced)

That would be greatly appreciated Smitty2.

ok.. finally found the bloody Brock bible copy I have (its not big and A5 size so it gets lost in my car library)

and I have been thru all the VH builds in the book starting with an 'L' tag number and its not listed

so officially that says to me NOT a car with a HDT build number but if it is the car I know
(mate of mine who worked at GMH like me then left to work at one of larger Vic dealer groups)
then it is a std VH SS with 5.0 option that got some xtras from HDT (like my VK 234 pack Berlina did)

Hey Smitty,

Thanks for taking the time and digging up the book!!

For what you described, I think youre on the money there! Either way, super excited about the car. It's back in Adelaide now and once I figure out the right channels to get signed off, get club rego back on it to take it for a cruise!

If your mates name David/Dave (apologise, my brother spoke to him), then yes it is. I believe he'll be in Adelaide this side of Christmas and wanted to come have a look at it, which of course we agreed to.
