Has anyone got a pic of the correct inlet for a late (Jan '78) 4.2 LX Torana? and or some general engine bay area. I'm putting the engine together for a mate, but the engine was incomplete and missing some parts. Thanks,

Thanks, should be something like this (although I am not sure about the sensor next to the thermostat, think that is a Holden one)  but personally? I would grab a red motor 4BBL 308 inlet manifold (HZ or LX style) and whack a 4BBl Quaddie on it (like they did on the blue XT5 253/4.2 engine in WB and VC) rather than the 2BBL bit of junk Holden put on the 4.2. Thanks Smitty2, but the heads on this have the horseshoe exhaust passage in the center, so I assume an EGR valve on an after '76 model. I have seen manifolds with the passage that have a narrow ridge along the side and also one with a 'Log' along the side so thought it would be one of those.

The first one Smitty put up is HT-HG although it’s been drilled for cable throttle (LH, HJ, early LX).
The second one is HZ, VB and really late LX.
There is one in between, HX and middle LX, has big barrels down the sides of the intake pots.
Best bet is grab a HZ, VB or late LX (A9X) 5.0L intake and a Quadrajet off a blue 4.2. Or get a KC 4BBL intake (fits all carby Holden V8) or a Edelbrock Performer. There are also really cheap Chinese knockoffs too but my guess is they won’t fit tight. |

Thanks for that, unfortunately the owner would like it to retain stock appearance, but I'm sure the right combination (and it is an Auto) will be acceptable. The pic I tried to put up must be the middle one with the barrels, so it looks like number two it is. Thanks again for the help guys I'll keep looking for some pics of the engine bay.

It’ll be close to HZ engine production beginning Terry, around when the pilots started. Possibly like the chassis changes. |

Can anyone tell me on a 12/77 4.2 v8 manual van what the intake manifold numbers are please? 9932888 or 9945690-88 ? Also the carb number of the 2 barrel? 23-3111 or 23-3112? Like to get the right parts before rebuilding engine

Can't help with the manifold casting number but carby no. 23-3112 is correct for a 4.2 V8 manual. The 23-3111 is for the auto.

Great thanks dr terry…… I have a few manifolds here on engines the 23-3112 that’s bolted to manifold 9932888 looks very dirty and untouched (original looking) …. I do have the gmh parts book I need to look up, manifold but couldn’t find info on Carbies with 23- 3112 ect ect. Also this said manifold has the egr valve blanked off…. Where as the 23-3111 carbed manifolds have the egr fitted….. did manual cars run the egr valve?

Thanks hk1837, thought this may be the case… any idea what color tailshaft the hz 253 m20 manual vans were? Im lead to believe light blue?

No but I’ll look it up in a few days, busy right now. Just about all V8 HQ to WB van & ute used the same tailshaft so plenty around. The only odd one out is HJ to about 5/79 5.0L auto, rest are all the same. |

My records show all HQ-HZ V8 SWB (exc. TH400) have a white painted tailshaft.
