I have a 253 (maybe a 308) going into a HJ ute. I have two trimatics, dont have any idea what condition they are in. Thinking about getting rid of them and putting a Celica 5 speed in it. Any views on what would be my better option.

Better economy for starters. Trimatic loses a lot. I assume steel case over alloy 5 spd, and what about your speedo, prop shafts etc.

If you use a steel case Celica 5 speed that has had stronger front cluster bearing replaced then you will have a gearbox that is about as strong as an Aussie four speeder.

A standard unmodified Celica steel case box lasts about 1 year behind a 202 be

5sp will last for ages behind a hot six or mild v8, depending on how you drive and a few minor mods that the box needs. use the steel case. replace the main ball bearing with a roller bearing, CBC will help you with the one you need.
use a good oil. dont

Thanks for the advice. Any idea on pricing on doing this front cluster bearing?
John
Speedo would just need cog to suite gearbox wouldnt it? and prop shaft would need to be changed (not too big a job?). What else would you think I need to do? T

If you are not comfortable pulling the gearbox apart yourself then Dellows or CRS can modify it for you (probably any gearbox specialist can). I believe that they replace a ball bearing setup with needle rollers which handle the load much better.

Thanks for the info. It sounds pretty easy. I have a good mechanic next to my business so fitting it out shouldnt be a problem.
Hopefully the ute will be as easy as your Commodore.

I had a 3.36 in my VC behind the 6 and Five speeder and it was beautiful. Plenty of pickup could putter around in 5th at 60kmh (just) and gave nice cruising and good economy.

Basically I went for the rear end ratio that was closest to a VL 6 cyl 5 s
