Im just wondering if I should go for a 350 in my HQ, or spend a little bit more and go for a 383?

Can anyone give me a quick comparison between build cost, power output and driveability??

Also - if anyone knows of any decent engine builders in Perth, or where the best place to source crate motors? I'm not looking for a horsepower hero, just a good solid streeter.

Cheers, Al

I am going through this very exercise currently. I have a non-molested 350 (running badly) I have stripped down to rebuild / refresh.

For a 383 stroker kit (in NZ) pricing is currently running $1500 - $4000. Then the machining is likely to be an extr

I dont have anything to work with at this stage. I can buy a brand new 350SBC block off a mate, but aside from that, I have to start from scratch.

So Im just wondering if I should spend a little extra at the start and go for the 383?

3.75" stroke crank brand new is about the same cost as a crank grind on a secondhand 350 crank. Pistons are about the same cost too. So Id go for the 377 (what you are calling 383).

What sort of power would I be looking at?

Also - what sort of power loss is there through a TH400?

Gday,go for the TH350 and just put a shift kit and 2000stall converter in it.This will handle a good 383.

TH400s are BLOODY HEAVY(cast iron)and will rob you of power as they also have heavy internals.

I dropped a TH400 on my brother whilst trying to

Guess it depends on your budget.
More cubes = more power.
383s are a proven combo and with the 3.75 stroke makes for great street engines. You can easily make a 400hp engine that you dont have to rev the ring out of it. (6000 to 6500rpm) They make more

+1 for t400, unless you need every last pony, why not fit the stronger box?

+1 also for 3.75 stroke, by the time you mess around with a crank grind and what not, a stroker kit is good value.

minimal clearancing in the bottom end, shouldnt cost any m

try Chris Mills Kewdale or CHevpower in maddington for a crate motor. Starting @ $2990 for a 290 Hp version. These come with vortec heads, and 4 bolt mains.

I would go for a crate motor, tick done. Next job.

The T400 is a far easier conversion in H

Hi Guys.

A few myths creeping in here !!

Tex said "TH400s are BLOODY HEAVY(cast iron)"

NO they are not, both the TH350 & TH400 have all-alloy casings. The last cast-iron GM auto box was the early Powerglide. Now they were BLOODY heavy.

I have been doing a lot of soul searching on my options also and I was trapped between 350 and 383. My heart wanted 383 but the hand brake coughed loudly at 20 all up including 5 speed and housing. Found some decent guys in Welshpool that have put me in
