how do i hook up a Smiths Tacho? RVI 5000/00A

hi all,
recently got a nice little smiths tacho- (written on face is: RVI 5000/00A) off ebay and need some help on the how to hook it up. i get the basic premise of wire to ignition to power it and then connect to the coil but am at a loss which wires go to which.
Heres the info: coming from the back there are the following wire: - white (no trace) - white (no trace) which has been cut off v close to tacho body - green (no trace) - red (white trace) i assume this is power from the ignition? - red (no trace) does this go to positive on coil? - black (no trace) does this go to negative on coil?
Also on the back at the top there are 2 wire positions- brown for 8 cylinder & blue for 4 & 6 cylinder.
Any suggestions on how to wire it up to my EJ Special wagon?
Should it have a fuse in the circuit anywhere?

Hi Joel,
While I don't know the specific wiring for your tacho, most aftermarket ones follow this:
White - Dash Lights Green - Coil Negative Red - Ignition Feed Black - Earth.
Is it a shift-light or adjustable redline/rev limiting tacho? Maybe

Hi Joel.
This sounds like what they call an 'impulse tachometer'. They were marketed by Smiths in the '60s and are wired differently to modern tachos. I remember fitting one for a guy once. You will have to ask an 'older' more experienced instrument gu |

cheers dave, but there is no shift light or rev limiter. Its definately old school as Dr.Terry suggests.
i might give it a go with the white in series, as my web search thus far hasnt come up with anything. but any more suggestions will be greatly appr

Joel, I have one of these on my shelf I don't remember the exact wiring as I pulled it from a car 20yrs ago. I have recently decided to use it again as it is a very nice old tacho.
The clue on old Smiths Gauges is the RVI or RVC. RVI is an inline cur

Joel I've got a vague recollection that the two white wires for the series coil connection are polarity conscious. I recall that after converting an MGB from positive to negative earth the tacho wouldn't work until those wires were reversed. I don't hav

Thanks to all for the assistance.
In case anyone else has the same problem, the setup is:
black and green to Earth Red to ignition red with white trace to dash lights one of the white wires connects to original coil wire (which previously went di
