Could anyone tell me what diff the 307 GTS had from factory???
Not sure if they were banjos and or 10 bolt salsbury.

My friend has a 186S and wants to do a V8 conversion, question is will he have to modify the rear floor to accomodate a bigger diff or another option is to slot in a 307 and keep the 186S driveline.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That mod has been done to death and as a result of that the car will be worth more as an original 186S, especially if he has the books/paperwork to back it up.

Hi,

i just converted mt 186s opel to 307 powerglide, Still use the banjo just changed the yoke. No drilling no cutting no nothing. very simple exchange. I ran the speedo cable through the 6 cylinder hole. So much nicer to drive now and no longer stressing about the opel breaking. Mine was a documented and matching however kept every nut bolt washer and component to change it back when necessary as nothing is non reversable. So nothing to lose i dont think.

Hi
Seeing that it wont be for sale any reversable mods will be fine and like yourself,he is after better drivability and a nice V8 note to boot.
The 6 cylinder glide will have to be replaced but could you tell me what else is needed to buy?
Weve yet to go to a proffesional to get the job done and would love a little heads up on what else is needed.
Is it all over the counter stuff or does he need to troll through ebay?
Once his 186S and glide are out, they will be put away safely and restored to former glory one day.

Cheers.

apart from the obvious such as engine and ancilliarys and correct sump to suit.

Engine Mounts
Tail shaft
Radiator, shroud hoses etc
V8 Yoke
Flick the switch at the back of the tacho from 6 to 8
Accelerator bar across the firewall, and to youre carb
speedo cable needs to be longer.
Not sure about crossmember etc as mine was a 4 speed.
Exhaust

But that should be the most of it

Cheers

My car is an original 6 cylinder and I am converting to 307/powerglide (original 6 cylinder long gone). I have pretty much everything - I thought you needed to drill a hole on the firewall for the V8 powerglide speedo cable. Was there any dramas running it through the original 6 cylinder hole? When you say longer speedo cable do you mean in relation to the 6 cylinder version, or longer than a V8 one when run through the V8 firewall hole (if that makes sense).

I just got my speedo cable through one of the ebay mobs and it was easily long enough running through the 6 cylinder hole.

At release the HK GTS with 307 auto wasn't much different to 186S. They still had banjo and 5" rims standard. Later on Salisbury was basically standard in them and 6" rims became standard. You'll need to find a V8 powerglide crossmember, V8 banjo and a whole 307, 'glide, radiator etc. If you don't want to do it standard eg a crate engine i'd run a TH350 (uses same mounting bits and speedo cable as a powerglide) and use a HT-HG trimatic shifter plus cable kickdown.
Also, you can still put a 10-bolt in a banjo floor OK, the hump is only really needed for a 12-bolt.

The 12-bolt was a very rare factory option on 81837 only, so none were ever fitted behind a 307, to my knowledge.

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

It was a very rare and very expensive option, and from what i've learned they were only dealer fitted upon special order. Not sure if the Beechey HT had one fitted by the plant or the dealer though.

Thanks for replies guys, youve given us a lot of info to work with.
Even though a V8 is going into the car,he is adamant that no irreversable changes or mods are done to the car.

The only one you won't be able to do then is the V8 speedo cable hole. Rest are bolt in.

If you modify the 186S Head like this one pictured below that I did for a mate a while ago, you will easily out-perform any standard 307. The spec on a 186S engine was 145 BHP from factory, and a 307 was only a little more. Modifying the head to a 9 port will give you an extra 40-50 HP with also changing the WW-2 Metering jets.
