Hi guys,

I am planning to upgrade from a 202 to a 253 for my HQ ute. I have a question in relation to passing the blue slip. I am told by the RTA technical info that I don't need an engineers certificate as the HQ ute also came out with a 253. But I may need to upgrade the brakes and suspension package. My question is, did all utes come out with the same package regardless of the size engine?

Regards

Dave

When they say you will need to upgrade brakes and suspension, they simply mean you will have to fit what Holden would have fitted to the car, or equivelent, when they fitted the 253.

So this will mean you have to run discs on the front (all V8s had to have disc, they will be the same as 6 cylinder discs) and springs that will take the extra weight.

G'day HQ sandman as far as i know that HQ came out with 179,186,202 253,308 and 327 and 350 engines,
the brakes should all be the same no different, the chassis is already strengthened where as Hj-wb were not and they didn't come out with anything bigger than 308.
You may need to get new springs if you wan't as 6 were a smaller wire diameter that should be the only upgrade as well as the diff,no engineers report needed when you have a HQ you almost have open slather on what you would like to do within reason,no polution gear was fitted to hq so you can use a hq right through to wb just take of the polution gear.
And just go into the RTA and give them the new engine number and engine size that should be all but if any one else knows more please post
cheers Jonesy77

HQ actually had (in Australia) 173, 202, 253, 308 and 350. All were fitted a HQ ute by GMH.

HQ did have pollution equipment, ADR27 was added during the HQ series. Some late HQ's even got canisters.

In NSW you can't just whack in any engine with pollution equipment removed. You must fit the pollution equipment that came with the car that the engine came from. This includes ULP equipment (Cats etc). Best bet is to get a HT-HJ engine. You'll need a blue slip for the engine change. I think when the National regs come in you'll need a mod plate too which comes from an Engineer?

Thanks guys for your help. Well I got discs on the front so thats all sorted. I got new springs from a V8 ready to go in. Also got a 308 diff. When are the National regs due to come in?
