Hi guys,

Wondering if you could help me out.

I just got my Dad to put a new clutch and pressure plate in my HQ ute.

Now there is this annoying tapping sound.

What is it and how do I fix it?

your dad stuck to the clutch? the cat you just ran over?

next to impossible to tell without hearing it & seeing it in person, noise likes to travel in cars, could be a uni joint, spigot bearing, a bad clutch set up or just a loose dust cover..

Good call Monaro!

All I know is, the more it revs the faster the tapping is. Definetly from the gearbox somewhere.

most likely one of the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel has come loose and is hitting the dust cover. done it myself. take off the dust cover and retighten all the bolts, run the engine without the dustcover and see what happens.
do not drive around with no dust cover it causes a vacuum at the rear of the motor which leads to oil leaks,

I sure will John.

I haven't had time to look into it yet. I will check it out over the weekend.

I got another issue at the moment. The accelarator cable is too tight. I can't seem to find the medium when driving, either not enough revs or too much. I can't gradually put the pedel down. I have ordered a new cable, so hopefully thats the issue.

HQs didn't get an accelerator cable, they had mechanical linkage. Yours must be a conversion.

It's more than likely to do with they way the conversion was done, rather than just a 'faulty' cable.

Return spring(s) could also be a bit too heavy. I had a real nightmare with my HJ when I switched from Quaddie to Holley. Then realised that I had used an old mini clutch spring for the accelerator return spring. It returned all right, but you couldn't press with any degree of precision. Found a (much) lighter spring, now all good.

Well well well.

My Dad is a gem.

First off, thanks Dr Terry. It was the linkage in relation to the accelerator. All good now.

The starter motor was changed and now no tapping noise.

This ute has never driven so good. I was nearly going to sell it, but not now. All is good.
