I would like to put a kit through my stromberg carby. It is a single throat one off a 186 red motor. Are there any cheap and nasty kits to avoid, or are the ones from repco, super cheap, autobarn etc all fine? I have gas fitted and have recently experienced rough idle and stalling from idle when on fuel but runs well on gas, if I switch to petrol on the highway it runs perfectly so I can eliminate ignition or fuel pump issues as the cause. Maybe a blockage somewhere from the fuel tank running very low?

Thought if I take it off to put a kit through it at the same time might be wise.

Any tips?

Hi
Bad fuel?
Gaskets will dry out on a gas car.
Fuel can go off in 4 weeks .
run all the petrol out and try new petrol can do gaskets etc.
Ps look for fuel leaks went switching to petrol as floats
can rub on the inside of the carby.
kits I have used were Echlin and Fuel Miser .
not done one for some years only holleys

I have a duel fuel 186 ht prem and had the same problem when on petrol . Carbie kit will fix it or just replace the plunger and the top cover gasket .

Got a kit at Super Cheap on the weekend for $8 on sale. Only thing I'm concerned about is how to stop it happening again. If you need to run petrol in it occasionally how do you stop the gaskets drying out?

You will need to run petrol at least several times a week to prevent the carby drying out. You can help by using standard unleaded instead of E10, the main problem with E10 is that it evaporates much more quickly than standard fuel. Another thing would be to add some upper cylinder lubricant like 'Valvemaster', it too will slow down the evaporation rate. Maybe just switch to petrol for 5 minutes every 2nd day, that will also help.

My LPG system starts up on petrol & then automatically switches to LPG, after a preset period. It works well.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

I allways start up on petrol and flick on the gas once the engine has reached operating temp and when I get to work flick it back on petrol when i am almost there . Same routine going home and one trip from work just on petrol once a week and use 98 oct with a lead replacement additive . It took 4 yrs for my stromberg to need a kit through it .
