I have a vibration that occurs when I back off in lower gears and when I sit on just uder 2000 rpm. Gearbox is auto. I keep replacing timing seals as they leak after a couple of months. I have replaced all the componenants on the front of the engine including the harmonic balance, power stearing pump, alternator and water pump. Drive shaft uni joints are tight with no movement.
Rear main seal does not leak.
This is driving me mad - any help would be apprecited?

could be a few things but considering what u have tried, i would check the trans mount. its suprising how much vibration can come through the car at certain revs when the mount is stuffed. next thing is maybe tailshaft centre bearing or t/shaft balance

Engine mounts. have a good close look at them...
or

did you put the correct harmonic balancer on?
not sure about V8, but the V6 VR and VS are different and if you swap them around the engine will vibrate badly....

Thanks for the replies - some good ideas. I replaced the engine mounts yesterday and the vibration has changed a bit. Not quite as bad below 2000 rpm but much worse up to 3000 rpm.
I found the two bolts to the auto gearbox mount missing which shows how much vibration I am getting. The vibration above 2000 rpm might have got worse since I replace the two gearbox mounting bolts
The vibration is there when not moving - just taking the revs up and as the revs come down so I don't think it is drive line.
The harmonic balance is the right one.
Could the torque converter go out of balance?
I will replace the gearbox mount this week.
Thanks for the help guys.

The clutch fan has caused vibration issues for a few mates of mine. Try taking it off & running without it to test.
Cheers,

Mick

Yep, I tried that. Vibration was the same. That is why I changed everything that hangs off the front of the motor like water pump, power steering pump etc. Since I put the geabox mounting bolts back in the vibration is right through the rev range with the car in neutral or park.Vibration gets faster with revs.
Motor is running really well. It is almost making me think I have a bearing failing in the gearbox.

Hi have you checked the flex plate for cracks.
Torque converter bolts tight.
Can the torque converter be unbolted and pushed back.
Most cars with vibrations around 1200 to 1800 rpm have been the harmonic balance.

I havn't looked at the flex plate or torque converter. I am leaning towards this though. The harmonic balance is a new one and did not change the vibration at all when changed. The vibration now is right through then rev range. I will change the gearbox mount and pull the cover off the flex plate on the weekend. I might have to take it to a gearbox specialist and see what they think. The gearbox is not having any issues through the gears. I will also try a compression test just in case it shows up anything. I don't think it will as the motor is not missing at all.
Gees I am struggling with this.
Thanks for the help guys.
