I'm having a bit of an issue with one of my exterior rear vision mirrors, same as the one below.
15 years on the car, no problems. Now the actual glass mirror inside the cowling has started to move of its own free will. I have not dismantled the assembly to investigate as yet.
Questions:
What provides the resistance for the glass mirror to maintain the position you set it in?
Is it a ball/socket, friction type of set up?
Are they adjustable, or once loose, are they buggered & need replacement?

push the top of the mirror in as if you are adjusting it to look at the sky..in underneath you should see a phillips head screw holding a bracket..undo this and remove the hole mirror and figure it out from that..
going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car...

So what you've described to me is how to remove the whole mirror from the base that is mounted to the door?
Gee.....thanks.
With the mirror glass out, I did find a ball & socket type of pivot that allows the mirror its movement inside the housing. The glass has the ball on the rear of it & the housing has the socket. 2 wave washers provide some of the tension & location of the glass to stop it rotating. The glass should pop firmly into the socket, mine was loose. The only thing I could think to do was to slightly pein the socket to make it slightly smaller & therefore a little tighter when the glass was popped back in. Once done, the glass was quite firm in the housing, hopefully firm enough so that it doesn't move.

If that were the case there would be no need to push the top of the mirror in to gain access to underneath and behind the mirror.... nice gratitude... perhaps you should learn to read and understand what was written.... Pffft
