Hi I am wondering if anybody knows of a good brand of vinyl paint/Dye in a can that gives good results. For the last 25 years I have been using VHT brand vinyl dye doing all sorts of things from consoles, dash facias, steering wheel rims (Rubber type) and horn buttons (rubber type) etc and getting fantastic results especially when doing HJ -Z GTS dash Facias. The finish would be as smooth as anything with no hint of peel and it was hard if not impossible to tell that it had been recoloured. The problem is now I am trying to do up a GTS dash facia (Started about 3 years ago) and the VHT brand I keep trying even when they change the can appearance is now crap, it leaves a peely finish and also spits big blobs every now and then. I have tried other brands but they are no better and I don't really like painting the plastic as it does eventually peel/lift or chip were as the dye sticks like s*** to a blanket. I have contacted VHT because they have changed the nozzle a few times as well with no better results but they just basically fobbed me off. Could it be something as simple as just shaking the can longer and maybe getting the paint warm or is somebody out there getting good results with another brand I am unaware of????? Please help as I really want to use this dash. Cheers

I've used acrylic lacquer on a number of occasions with good results. Make sure you remove any grease and give it a really good clean. When you're ready, no need for undercoat, just give it quite a few light coats until you get adequate coverage. The lacquer tends to 'bite into' the vinyl and sticks well. I used it on the dash, door trims and arm rests of my 'J' and it was still in top condition when I sold it after 6 years. The only place it rubbed off was on the steering wheel and that's expected with all the rubbing from your hands.
Vinyl spray tends to go sticky after a while and rubs off.

i have used acrylic and a plasticiser. talk to a bike paint shop and they will be able to tell you what to use. the bike fairings are plastic and require i think (plastic add ) to be added for the correct plastic adhesion. kel

I am more after a good brand of dye in a can because I found that it gave a more natural plastic finish were as the acrylic paint always looks like it has been painted. I might have to see a paint shop and start spraying it with a gun which is such a hassle for small jobs when a can is just sooooooooo easy, quick and clean.

Most paint shops these days mix paints to your colour and then put into a can.

Have you tried warming up the can? I always leave my aerosols in the sun of in a bucket of WARM water for 20 minutes.
The higher pressure gives a better spray finish. |

Hey Mr Sir. I had a look at the brand i used for my last console and it was K & H. It was a great product and is still sittin pretty after a few years. I am going to have to order it in again as no one that i went to today (5 shops..) seemed to stock it. Anyhoo check it out here - http://www.khst.com.au/index_autoretail.html

Hi Hainzy, K & H was one of the brands I tried when the VHT ended up being crappy but I found that it also would spit blobs out every now and then. I have found when doing textured surfaces like a console it is ok because sometimes an imperfection can go unseen but when doing a smooth surface like the GTS dash it shows up when the paint decides to come out in a couple of blobs (normally just when you decide to give one last go over for good luck!!!!). AS mentioned the VHT use to be great for every thing and with very little effort. There even use to be a brand "Top Cat" that was just as good. I just think there is something they are doing with the mix. I will try warming it and shake the crappers out of it.

It's interesting you mentioned the Top Cat paint. During my appreticeship in the early 80's right through to the mid 90's I used the Top Cat engine paint. It was/is by far the best engine paint I've ever used. We would rebuild Nissan TD42 engines and give them one coat and that was it. Haven't seen it for years
