I have just upgraded the family cars to a VE Omega and a VE sportswagon. Both V6, but not the new SIDI engine, just the old 3.6 l jobby.
There is a weird vinbration in the driveline at 1200 revs. It is only very slight, it feels like driving over rough bitumen. It only happens at 1200 revs, speed up or slow down and it goes away.
The Omega is an 07 with 85K's, it is a lot more noticeable than the Sportswagon. It is an 08 with 50k's. I thought it may be just part of the car as both of them do it, but the omega is really starting to give me the sh!ts.
Is this a common fault? What is the cause? can it be fixed??

My work car ('07 Omega 3.6) has done that since day 1, and Holden reckoned there was nothing wrong with it.
I think it's just a harmonic in the exhaust. I have a hill near work that the stop-start traffic crawls up at around 5-6km/h, and it's right on the point of the vibration. It's bad enough to buzz the interior mirror, but that's the only time it bothers me. |

Both those links refer to V8s, and at much higher road speeds than 1200rpm would allow.
This is more a harmonic via the exhaust, not a tailshaft induced vibration, and it's perculiar to the V6. |

Yeah this is definately not a high speed thing. Most noticeable at around 60kph, and always at 1200 revs. Speed up or slow down and it goes away.
Exhaust you think? I might have to investigate this a bit further. It is really starting to give me the sh!ts.

Try swapping the front and rear wheels over and see if that makes a difference, even if you swap them back again. also try driving at the speed over grass if you can find a long enough stretch of grass. that will isolate the tyres as a cause.

Also you have to remember wagons will always have more noise than sedans so take that into account. my VR has an exhaust drone that fortunately cuts out at 100k so long cruises are not insanity driving.

Hi John,
The sedan is a lot worse than the wagon. I expect that hollow echo sound you get with wagons. But with the sedan being worse, I am looking for something else.

What you are looking at is the lock up converter being locked too early on the VE
There was a new cal that had to be flashed into the car that "supposedly" fixed this issue,ie locking at a slightly higher speed,but i'm not sure how successful it was.
Check with your local dealer

Righto.. went and saw my trans guy today. He described it perfectly. He too says that it is the converter locking up too early. So I am booked in for a trans service and a "flash" next Wednesday.
I will let you know what happens.

Seems they could not do the "flash" as the fella that was to do it can only do the 5 speed auto's, not the 4 speed.
But they have contacted a Holden Dealer who thinks he can help. So I am off there tomorrow.
Stay tuned for the story on how the Holden Dealer didnt want to really help, he just wanted to waste some of my time.

Just got back from the Holden Dealer.
Seems my car has the latest update transmission software already. So there is nothing more they can do.
I was told that it was not a vibration, it is more like a noise. It is just a quirk that these VE's have.
Excellent. The 'noise' just SH!TS me to tears.

Knock a couple of the wheel weights off and then you wont find the noise as anoying as the vibration through the steering wheel.

it,s something holden has never been able to get right with athe v6 combo the nosie virbration harshness nvh they should go look at the japs to see how refined there stuff is, e.g an old v6 ford telstar could rev them to the revlimter hardly felt like they are even running.
