Is there any way to tell engine capacity by the engine number on a Chev V8 small block?

Sometimes. But usually you can tell from the casting number which can be found on the tail of the block, above the bellhousing on the (Australian) passenger side. Of course engine cubes can change with bore size (eg 307 from 3 7/8" to 4" gives 3
