About 12 months ago I was offered a deal I couldnt refuse. A mate of mine was moving house and decided he couldnt take his ute with him. He offered it to me for the cost of transfer which was $37. He had already stripped and repainted the chasis, all suspension components, added power steering, disk brakes with booster, new sills, rst repaired and purchased many components off ebay and elsewhere for the build.Since then I have been spending quite a few hours and dollars on it. Originally it was a 73 HQ with a 173,cloumn shift trimatic, banjo as per pic below. More to come just wanna see if I got this photobucket thing sorted first. Trev...

Yep that seemed to work. Anyway plans were in place to finish the bodywork and give it a heart transplant with a crate engine 350 chev/T400/3.08 Salisbury. Below is some more before photos. The old 173 ended up with a new paint job. Pity I never ran it before selling. What a mess... More to come... Trev...

the chassis was all fixed up by the previous owner as mentioned before. and work slowly progressed on the bodywork. Rear 1/4 bit of rust, not too bad Floors repaired and undersealed and more The door were beyond repair as one of them was orig Hq and rusted to the sh**house and the other was from a HZ that had a major side impact and bent the intrusion bar quite a bit. It also contained so much bog that its no wonder the hinge bushes were cactus. Anyway more to come next post. Trev...

Just continuing on as I upload some more images into photobucket. One thing I did lose when the new sill panes were added was the groove just above the sills in the rear panel Im not to wooied about this as I plan to either paint the sills black or get hold of some polished strips to go on. But it slowly progressed. One thing I did do was to cut the old panel out behind the seats so as to add room for speakers, esky, bits n pieces. While all this was going on, the motor turned up. A 330Hp turnkey crate engine from Chevpower in Perth. Very Nice!!!!!!! And another one with the Pacemaker Tri-Y extractors and rebuilt T400. More next Post.. Trev...

More work done. One of the doors that was scrapped. Rust in the usual spot. bodywork continuing. Decided to paint the firewall in the final colour which is GMH Antelope. Managed to get the engine and G/Box in place. More work being done on the rear bulkhead. Front guards fitted. Gee I hope I dont have to cut a hole in the bonnet when it goes on.

It looks like the filter is drop base, which should clear ok (depending on the manifold). On my old HQ ute with 400SBC I had a Holley manifold, 600 vac sec holley and then a 3" K&N on drop base, and it fitted ok. Then switched to low rise dual plane manifold, and could go to a flat base on the 3" K&N no probs. I haave just put the holley on my new HJ with 350 SBC, and a 2" flat base goes under bonnet ok. The 3"K&N just fouls on the bonnet bracing beam. The beam can be ground down to give an extra 1/2 inch to inch clearance.

Thanx for the comments guys. Yep its a big job but getting there slowly. As for the colour "Sandman77" it will be something completely different. The colour is Holden "Antelope" which was found on the HX premiers from memory. Sort of gold in colour with a slight flake through it. "Jabba", I managed to get the bonnet back on but it did foul with the air cleaner by about 5mm so I attacked the air cleaner base and removed approx 8mm form the bottom lip. It just fits now although the choke lever now hits the air cleaner base. I am not to concerned about this as the choke will probably never be used up here in north WA as it dosent get cold that much. I managed to put together a quick list of items that I have bought, sourced, borrowed but I hate to think of how much it has cost me ...... anyway ill try to get some more done over the next few weeks as time permits and get some more pics for you.

Jabba, Seems to be the most common question im asked. Now Im not a qualified panel beater or spray painter, but I reckon I with some prior planning and a bit of forethought I can do this paint job myself. Gotta admit, the bodywork is a lot harder that any spraying ive done so far. Anyway not to blow my own whistle but Ill give it a go and lets see how it turns out. Will be interesting.

PS Anyone have a T400 TBar shifter for sale complete with linkages including the gearbox lever.

boom, Been an ongoing project now for 6-8 months. Obviously Im limited to the amount of time I can do things due to work comittments etc. But overall as for this time of year, its too damn hot to spray anything. weve had 40-45 deg for the last couple of months now. The shed must get up to 50 or 60 deg during the day and theres now way im going out in that sauna. Beer gets hot too quick. Give it a couple of months and all should be well. Cant wait....

Hey Trev,
I havent visited this section for a while so only just saw this thread - Great work!!
Im wanting to do a similar thing to the rear of my tonner cab, what metal did you use to replace the original piece and was it difficult to get it welded up ie - much warping etc??
I love the colour and that motor looks sexy as!! What diff are you using?
Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming man!

Mr Void, I used 3 mm plate that I had laying around. First I cut the old bulkhead out then made a template for the new one out of cardboard. Then after some cutting and a lot of grinding along the botttom edge to mach the floorpan, the whole thing was mig welded on the inside every 3-4" finally finished of sealing any gaps with sicaflex (not sure of the spelling). As for the diff, at the moment it will be a 3.08 one wheeler until I can find something better.
Anyone know a website that sells fittings to suit inlet manifolds for heater hoses, inverted flare nuts for transmission pipes etc... ???

Couple of new pics for you.... Its been too bloody hot to spray anything so I have been busy doing some other bits. Managed to replace the ol banjo with a 3.08 Salisbury that required some attention. (new wheel bearings, wheel cylinders, pinion seal, brake shoes etc....)Fitted the tailshaft (are they normally this tight to fit) and put the new shockies on. Then I tackled the exhaust and had to build the intermediate pipes from the extractors to the mufflers. All is well and the under bonnet wiring is getting there. Wish the weather would cool down so I could do stuff. Next job is to finish the wiring so at least I can fire the old girl up and if the weather ever cools down I may be able to put some paint on her. http://i266.photobucket....5/Trev10_photos/Dash.jpghttp://i266.photobucket....5/Trev10_photos/rear.jpgCheers Trev...
