Hi all, a new poster here and seeking some sage advice. I have an HK Prem with 4 wheel drums that I am working on at the moment. The car is a 186 with 3 speed crash box. It has been sitting for 20 years while i have been out of the country and now working to get it back on the road and cleaned up. I have run into brake issues and cannot bleed the brakes at all (no fluid coming through).
So far I have replaced wheel cylinders and removed and cleaned out/checked master cylinder. Next step i suspect may be to be check and clean or replace the distribution box. OR, it could be worse and could have other issues with the lines.
I would like some recommendations on my next steps. I see the solid lines are not really easily available to buy to replace, although i have yet to replace the rubber lines leading to each of the brakes (they may also be blocked and/or degraded and dead). Also while replacement/reco distribution boxes can be found, they are not always available. Are there other options to replace the lines throughout with something more modern and reliable (braided I have heard of)?
I am looking for daily driver level, not a show car (although do want it to look nice and clean).
Welcome any advice and guidance from the community as not sure which way to proceed next.
Much appreciated!!

I would definitely be checking the rubber hoses.
I has something similar happen, lost rear brakes one day while out driving. Decided to fiddle around and rear brakes on my HJ wouldn't move fluid at all through the bleed nipple.
I blamed the line lock and changed it, replaced the master cylinder with one I had lying around, still nothing.
The single rubber line that feeds both rear brakes had collapsed.

Replace the 2 flexible brake lines at the front and the 1 flexible line at the rear. These deteriorate and collapse internally and either stop you from bleeding the brakes or when the brakes are working can stop the brakes from releasing when you take your foot off the brake pedal

I'd suspect the flexible hose first. They can break down internally and block up. Can you crack one of the flare nuts open at the distribution box? See if you have fluid there when bleeding the brakes. If you do, try moving to the next join/union/ block down stream. Eventually you'll get to the blocked point/s
Dunno your location, but there's a local chap who makes hard brake lines to order near me ( Nth Side Brisbane). If you're in or near a capital city, there's going to be someone who can make them if you need 'em. Re the flexible hoses, again there's people making them. A good mate just had one made for a clutch job. |
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right. |
