Holden are just going to disappear. Their market share is going to be minuscule without fleet sales and Utes or any hero cars at all. Toyota must be laughing all the way to the bank. Holden has entered the new market and left all their good will,developed over 70 years behind.

2016 sales:
Holden overall: 94,308 units
Commodore 25,860 units

Commodore makes up less than 30% of Holden sales. So they won't "disappear" at all. Yes, they'll lose those 25K units they sold, and maybe only sell 5-10K of the replacement large car, but the other 72.5% of their sales volume from 2016 are still around, and progressing. Some are being updated, and sourcing is shifting from Asia to Europe for some models, which will probably even help when it comes to badge snobbery.

One of the "bragging points" that I got tired of hearing from Mondeo drivers at work was "it's a German car" - what a load of crap, they were made in Belgium, not Germany - big difference, but that was a moot point for the shmucks who still chose them as a "euro ford" over other makes/models.

That same mentality is present among a lot of the buying public (how do the euro-trash models, that are lacking compared to their Asian sourced competition, sell in such volumes otherwise?) Sourcing the Astra from Europe will cash in on that 'snob factor' as well.

And to add to that - some 30-40% of Commodore sales are V8 models to private buyers, not to fleet & govt.
It's actually been over a decade since fleet volumes for Commodores were significant enough to affect their sales figures.

Look at Ford - they did 81,207 sales overall in 2016. Territory sales were at best 750/month, and at worst, 500/month. Falcon & ute were around 300/month on average - but the ute ceased production just past half-way into the year, and the others in October, with stocks all but gone in November. Locally made Fords would struggle to be 12,000 units of that 81K sold in 2016.

Ford's total sales in Australia:
2016: 81,207 units
2015: 70,454 units
2014: 79,703 units (6300 or so were Falcon)

You can see pulling out of local manufacturing hasn't hurt Ford - the meagre sales of local models have bugger all effect - take out the local models from 2016 sales numbers, and they'd still be on-par with 2015 numbers, so it shows they are increasing the sales of imported models at a greater rate than the lost sales of local ones.

Holden will likely end up doing the same, but over a longer period, as they sold 3x as many locally produced cars in 2016.

It looks as the new Commodore could be a good thing, the new V6 is said to have a lot more power and the 9 speed auto should make a V8 worthless, especially seeing that we will be forking out about $3 a litre will be not to far away.

The all wheel drive in the V6 looks to be a spot on setup, not like the backward rubbish that they had with the commodore all wheel drive.

The 4 cyl Commodore Anxious well I would hope it has a 8 speed auto or 9 speed to hope too put it above the rest of the market.

So I would say that the V8 days are finished and GMH knows that to produce a V8 will be a flop and this new Commodore V6 9 speed auto should perform just as well as a our V8's do today.
I love my V8's but I can't see any hope for such beyond 2018 and on.

Australia will have to try to protect our own nations interest first or we have no hope of supporting anyone on Government hand outs, we will be like a 3rd world dumping ground, shafted by all the degenerates, funny thing is when I talk to such morons, they say they don't mind to live that way. The thing is they have nothing at all to distinguish them from all the other imports now. It's a crowded market and now they are nothing unusual.
As for V8 being dead? there will always be a percentage who buy something different. It won't matter how many speeds an auto has really. People will be conned into electric cars regardless of their dubious environmental advantages. However after just returning from Sydney and seeing its disgusting smog increase I think it will be a big improvement in urban areas.

The important fact that seems to be overlooked is that Australia has lost a lot of it's manufacturing expertise for the assembling of cars. However the aftermarket is kicking goals with supplying parts and accessories for most cars coming into Australia and exporting many 4WD parts.
There are still some manufacturers sending parts off overseas and the major car companies developing cars for the global market. This change in vehicle supply will become more competitive as the GMH/Ford allegiance has just about died except for the enthusiasts and those who support the brand. Just looking at the vehicles in a normal suburban street shows a great diversity already.

I still don't see why Holden think anyone large number of people will want a V6 front wheel drive sedan? Their biggest selling sedans are V8 rear wheel drive and utes, wagons and Statesman also make up a decent %. They may have had a recent bump in sales but that will simply be those who would have bought a Falcon.

Not 100% on this but I am pretty sure its a all wheel drive..

The new generation Holden dealer lost my business many years ago...I detested their arrogance of "I should be privileged to drive a Holden"..salesman with real estate grins and gold chains/rings and bragging all over town.
I believe Toyota were always guarded about being top dog as they knew one bad model and they were back down the line.To the point I will never buy one of the imported so called Holdens...They could have changed the name for all i care.

Don't get my wrong, I enjoy playing with the small 70's 80's collection I have.

It has a really truly advanced AWD system how it works, not the crap that AWD came out in the VZ and with that backward power robbing crap that the ute and the Monaro thing got.

That's a sweeping statement Byron. Most Lexus cars are proper RWD, it's only the cars where they share platforms with Toyota where the FWD comes in.

From memory it's the RX series, which are basically Klugers & the ES300 which are essentially a Camry copy. I believe also that the little CT200h is Corolla-based.

All their own models LS400/430, GS300 & IS200/250 are pure RWD. The LX470/570 is a fancy 100/200 series Landcruiser (a proper 4WD) .

Their RC F & GS F cars are both RWD V8.

There are plenty of other Lexus models too, some that we don't get in Australia, & most of those are RWD as well.

I was referring only to the Lexus's with FWD, as i'm familiar with the RX as I own one, not the rest of the Lexus range. Not a sweeping statement at all!

I get you now, but I think the RX Lexus is the only one which is like that (FWD type AWD). The ES & CT are just FWD shopping cars, no rear axle at all.

Some of the RX are FWD only, I drove one of those (RX270) as a loan car - very uninspiring car to drive. They have the basic Hilux Workmate 2.7L 4cyl engine in them. Like driving a lounge chair with a lawnmower engine. The RX350 (and RX450h) are afaik all essentially FWD with drive to the rear axle when needed (I always thought they were a Kluger but someone told me they were a Camry underneath). The RX350 does drive well, but the drive configuration would not be my choice if I wanted a "Commodore/Falcon/Camry" etc type sedan. To me it just adds complexity, maintenance and future headaches once the car gets 8-10+ years on it. For Holden's volume seller sedan, surely they'd want either straight FWD or straight RWD? If I wanted AWD i'd want proper rear drive and front drive. I guess we'll see what the company Holden becomes as I cannot see them doing well with what is proposed.

Correct on both counts, both the RX & the Kluger are really just jacked-up Camrys.

The real giveaway is the sideway mounted engines. Generally speaking these FWD type 4WDs are all like that. Look at the Nissan X-Trail, Holden Captiva, Honda CR-V, Ford/Mazda Tribute/Escape, Kuga etc. etc.

The Rav four we had was front wheel drive with drive shaft to the rear as well. It was a good car to drive. That new Commodore appears to be a liftback though? Do they have a full size spare??
Doesn't the deal with Opel look up in the air after this series though? They could go to a Chev car in the future. It's just a complete shambles and I can't see why GM could be bothered with the hastle for bugger all sales really.
