The full list of 8/63 EH colours are as follows:-
Amberley Blue
Aqua Turquoise
Budgeree Green
Buller Grey Met.
Fowlers Ivory
Gibson Biege
Gundagai Grey
Jindabyne Mauve
Kalgoorlie Gold
Mitta Green
Morwell Grey
Portsea Blue Met.
Quondong
Roebuck Pearl Met.
Saltbush Green
Valley Mist Green Met.
Warrigal Black
Windorah Beige
Winton Red

The 4 metallic colours are exclusive to Premiers, so there would be no S4s in those colours. It's also unlikely the they made an S4 in Warrigal Black, although anything possible I guess.

It's also unlikely that they used all of the colours. Since the S4s were all built in one batch & not to order, you would think that they would just paint them in a range of the most popular colours, which makes the one known Quondong S4 such a curiosity.

I just Googled Quondong. You learn something new every day. I wonder if GMH called it after the plants or the locality named after the plants.

I still reckon that Etna Maroon (Met) 207-7457 on an FE Special, counts as the first metallic red.

Maroon is a dark red, is it not ?

Dr Terry

Agree, Maroon is a dark Brownish Red.
I always thought the HX LE was Maroon anyway, or perhaps Burgundy may be a better description.

Maroon is a brown with more red in it in the cmyk colour system. Marron is French for Chestnut.

Red is RED, as in LE Red. This is the first regular production metallic red, red in its name, on a Holden car. There is one earlier one a GMH produced car that I think Dr Terry would call a Holden but it wears no Holden badge or Lion, but for the purposes of these sorts of Quiz questions you'd say it was a Holden. Anyone think of it?

Google seems a bit confused......Quondong Point (with an O) is a place. Quandang is the fruit/plant. But they seem to be transposed a few times too.

I'd say they used the place, like they did for many of the paint colours (Panorama Silver, Canterbury Blue, Torquay sand etc), and even interior trims - well into the commodore era too - like Macedon Cloth in the VL Calais, Winton trim the VR SS, Doncaster was another trim type in VP I think it was. VS interior fabrics went overboard with place names - Avalon, Kyneton, Mallala, Eltham, Norfolk, Hotham, Eden....

There is a small chance it could be named after the fruit (moreso if it's a similar colour). It is a member of the Sandalwood family (Sandalwood being used by GMH) and they also had other fruity names - like Papaya for instance.

Na, only Kingswood. The WB Holden is a steel grille early in the piece.

Looks like a plastic grille to me on a round headlight 1980 cab & chassis but I can't work out how to post a pic.

They are steel, as far as I can recall all the ones I wrecked out were anyway. Headlight surrounds are plastic.

Are you guys forgetting about the WB Caprice? It would be the last steel (albeit stainless) grille on a Holden.
Cheers,

Mick

It is alloy. Cast alloy surround (same as Deville) and aluminium fins. It did have steel screws holding the fins to the surround!
