I've stuffed this up a bit.

Nos. 1 & 3 have already been answered correctly.

The first power steer was EJ & the first leather seats was FX.

2 & 4 are left.

2 HB SL Torana
4 LH Torana (as my normal guesses would be HQ and LJ but these have been stated) without looking anything up.

I've really answered No. 3 also.

The Brabham Torana had power discs as standard & was released in 1967, well ahead of the HK GTS & Brougham, which were the more obvious answers.

Byron also said HB for the metric speedo, this is probably close enough. It was the HB Series 1 which had the imported Vauxhall strop speedo which had a dual (metric/imperial) scale. HB Series 2 had the same speedo as LC Torana 4s.

I chose SL as you said had not been answered, but Brabham already mentioned.

67 Brabham was a package, but so to was the X2 and 186S. Were either of these standard with disc????

...Number 1 is EH and number 2 is VB Commodore. .. And we probably should specify series rather than model ??

...late edit .. I've never seen any power steering listed parts or diagrams in the '48-EJ MPC ?

The Series 70 engine was only an option for all models, but the Brabham 'package' was virtually a separate 'model' so that's my answer.

Dr Terry

The Series I Brabham was an option on the S & SL however the Series II Brabham was a model in it's own right with its own unique model number 82811.

The original Brabham is a vehicle in its own right, yes it is an option package on a lesser model. If that car doesn't have it sown identity then neither does a HQ SS, HQ GTS sedan, LC-LJ XU1, HQ-HZ Sandman etc.

If I was to ask the question: "Which Holden with an Australian assembled engine (meaning not including HK-HG 81837) was the first to get dual exhaust as standard fitment" the proper answer is HQ SS. If we argue it was an option package on HQ V8 Kingswood sedan then we have to say I think HX GTS as we cannot regard LH SLR5000 as a separate vehicle either as it is an option package on an LH SLR.

This is what I meant by controversial. I just asked which Holden, I didn't actually specify model or model series, but the package/option thing is a very grey area.

I don't think that an HB SL got discs, but a Brabham did.

In my view the Brabham was a distinct 'model' & is can be identified at a distance by the average punter as such, in much the same way as an HQ SS or GTS 4-door. An X2 is just an engine variant, with extra gauges, not much else. It didn't gain discs & is not a 'separate model' in my view.

To add to that I believe that an HD/HR X2 or HB Series 70 are only 'engine option packs' & not 'separate models'.

VB is not correct on any level. If I had asked which 'model series' got power discs brakes on every model in the range the answer would be HX. If I had asked which Holden series got front discs brakes (power boosting not mentioned) on every model in the range the answer would be TX Gemini. But I didn't, the question posed just said 'which Holden' meaning which individual Holden model.

On the topic of power steering, it's very much like power brakes. The first Holden to get 'genuine' power brakes was the FE in 1957 by way of a genuine Nasco dealer-fitted kit, which encompassed a PBR VH24 booster & the necessary dedicated fittings & pipes to suit FE Holdens (onwards). This same kit was factory fitted to the EH S4.

The EJ was the first Holden to get power steering by way of a genuine Nasco dealer-fitted kit. I have the literature for this, The first was a half page add in a April 62 Accelerator magazine & also the parts to service the kit do feature in some parts books in the EJ-HR era. They are not in the 48-EJ MPC as this was printed in 1962 @ EJ release, prior to the release of kit.

I actually own a 2-owner EJ Premier with this p/st system fitted. The first factory-fitted p/st system was that released in Feb 64 for the EH & this was also made available in kit form to enable dealer fitment post- production. This was also the case for HD/ HR/ HK etc.

Thanks for the clarifications Dr Terry. Model by model it is then....all good and noted. Keep 'em coming as it's a bit of fun for sure and good to learn some of the more obscure details. Cheers

Would the radials be first on the HZ with RTS ?

I'll hazard a guess. HK saw 185 Michelin or Pirelli Radial tyres become optional. From memory HT GTS350 had ER70H14 Aquajet Radials optional as well. So as a guess and without any literature in front of me I'd have to say possibly HQ GTS350 with ER70H14 although I wouldn't be surprised if these were standard with a D70. The only other possibility that comes to mind is the 1973 XU1 with Aquajets.

Getting warm. The date range is very close, but remember standard equipment, not optional.

ER70H14 became standard on HQ GTS350 in March '73 so it must be before that. Did the XV4 get them from release?

I'm happy to be corrected here, but I believe that the the first was the HQ SS which came standard with 195SR14, which is my answer.

Well that is four firsts for it.

1st Holden outside the 81837 to be standard with dual exhaust.
1st radial tyres standard.
1st Belmont or base spec with console shift.
1st regular production Holden to get the GTS exclusive fluted guards.
