1971 Holden HG Premier 186 trimatic.

Can anyone please supply information as to what changes may be necessary to possibly change over to a v8 engine.

If its a good running six I would leave it alone , a mate had a very nice 186 powerglide HK prem ran like a swiss watch but he wanted a V8, he got hold of another prem factory 307 swapped the running gear did work to the motor and it never ran as good as when he first got it , he regretted it after.

Cloudy's advice is pretty good. It is a pretty easy converion if you decide to proceed though. If you are happy to keep the banjo you'll need:

253 or 308 with HT-HG sump and HT-HQ carby on it (with linkage type throttle). Complete engine from water pump to flex plate, starter, air cleaner etc.
HQ-WB V8 engine mount adapters and mounts (will then bolt straight to the crossmember).
WB/Commodore LH shift trimatic if your HG is a T-bar.
HQ-WB RH shift trimatic if your HG is column shift.
V8 radiator.
Exhaust to suit.
V8 engine harness.
HT-HG 253 or 308 throttle linkage for the engine bay.
Disc brakes if not yet fitted.

V8's also had a bigger yoke on the diff for a bigger uni, so you really should fit this and tailshaft to suit. However if it is just to be a cruiser then the 6cyl one and 6cyl tailshaft will normally be OK.

Here is a whole engine and trimatic:
