Hey all, just about finished putting my HZ 308 T400 (mostly original) together and am doing little test and tunes prior to rego. Am havin a little problem with the car shutting down after about 5 mins of driving. I notice a few misses then it totally cuts out after about 1 min and rolls to a stop. I try to restart but she wont fire - open the bonnet, fuel in filter (changed the pump incase) and rattle the HEI dissy cover, jump in and hey presto she fires and purrs like a kitten for the drive home. Next day, didnt miss a beat for the 15K drive, next day shuts down again, starting to suspect rotor botton or dissy module - any ideas would be appreciated to get to the bottom of this. Next step new dissey

Your induction coil could be open circuited on heat build up

Use a bosch coil. The new ones are a waste of time. Get one from a wreckers as I don't think you can get the bosch ones new any more.

just put a new coil on and went for a spin, shut down even sooner than previous, got it going then it shut down in the 1k drive home (glad I bought the big battery..). Put a new fuel filter on- got about 500mtrs. Got it going then stuck it back in the garage as it seems to take a bit of cranking to get it going now. Thinking of looking at the fuel pickup/sender in the tank. The car was sitting for a few years before I got it 18months ago, had bugger all fuel in it. Now I've been adding good fuel it may have picked something up though have had the engine going for a while now. I'll keep posting as I look at different things
Any thoughts...

I had simular problem in the early 90s with my HZ SL/E Statesman and all it was, was the metal disc type mesh fuel filter just before the carbie, the motor would cut out then i would try to start it and no go,but try in 10 mins time and would purr like a kitten.just replaced it and had no problems.cheers

i rebuilt a hz a long time ago i replaced everything that i could with new parts rebuilt motor etc from front to back top to bottom i had a similar problem it would run then cut out let it sit for 5 min then restart and it would do it again after going over it with my mechanic we worked out that the only thing we didnt change was the actual fuel lines we made some new ones up and presto ran like a dream not saying this is your problem but it might be worth a look

just about to drop the tank out and noticed the rubber inter fuel line had been replaced earlier(between tank and pickup line). What was odd was it had a kink in it as the fuel line had dropped in its bracket or the rubber was too long. After reading your posts I hope thats it. Did a quick repair(cable ties to the rescue) and took it for a run and it appears to be going fine.. cant be that easy surely, if it is, I'll take the win and do a proper fix after a few more test runs. thanks for the posts as they are much appreciated. For interest sake the dissy is out of a WB (Bosch I think) haven't gone the Chinese way and hoping a mallory unit will find its way into my letter box soon...

The WB unit is more than good enough. Nothing to gain by going away from it I don't believe on a street engine.

Why would anyone replace a perfectly good Bosch HEI unit with a Mallory ??

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

liken to neatin up that engine bay with something with a cap that that doent look like a frisbee. I agree the wb bosch is a good unit but hey, if its not the original may as well be a bit of quality bling..

Convert it to an early style cap with a different rotor button.
I don't see the wb cap as a frisby, I see it as the best update that Holden made to their V8's. It means you never have to deal with poxy points ever again and that the earlier style ones look slow and useless. Just me though that thinks that maybe?
I assume the mallory is a points thing?

Mallory did make point systems in years gone by but now make a very good HEI unit(though a bit pricy), no better than the bosch but looks very neat. Replaced the section of offending fuel hose and all appears well. Many thanks again for the posts

they made the hei cap large for a reason, with the better spark it had tendancies to jump in the smaller cap, keep the bosch hei and the big cap it,s the way to go and if the module craps one day you will be able to get on any where ford,s toyota,s use the same module could you get a mallory module on a sunday?
