Yes you can. You need a 304 or 308 block, offset ground 308 crank, (normally) SBC small journal rods and 350 pistons. Narrow the rod big ends, deck the block to suit the piston height and clearance the bottom of the bores for the rod bolts. Capacity ends up somewhere between 325 and 330 odd cubic inches depending upon the bore size and the final stroke. You can use all the rest of the 253 except for the block, crank, rods and pistons.

Note that it is nowadays close to cheaper, and easier to build a 350ci inch stroker using an aftermarket crank, Holden rods and HSV pistons (or aftermarket replacements).

would probably be cheaper to buy and install a ls1 chev into it they make better power than the holden 253 or 308

Probably right, even an EFI 304 with the right minor mods like cam, exhaust, cold air and tune. No such thing as an LS1 Chev though!

LS1's were fitted to Holdens, but they are not Chev engines.

ok so if its not a holden or chev motor then who makes them and who supplies them are they the motors that are used in the gm cars in the states just asking the question if you check all the adds on ebay there is even performance books out there that refer to the ls1 through to the current motor as chev etc all the tuners and mechanics etc refer to them as chev motors as well not trying to be smart or anything like that i have only known them as a chev motor and i have only ever heard them referred as a chev motor ?

Byron is basically correct, the LSx engines are produced by GM-Powertrain & are used in a variety of General Motors cars, including Holden, Pontiac, GMC, Buick & Chevrolet.

Unlike the venerable Small Block Chevrolet engine, you won't find any bowtie emblems on them anywhere.

During the late 80s, General Motors U.S. consolidated their engine & transmission manufacturing facilities under one umbrella, instead of that ridiculous situation of 6 or 7 different divisions all producing their own unique units. Even the 'Cadillac' Northstar engines are not made by Cadillac they are designed & built by GM-Powertrain.

The fact that several aftermarket companies incorrectly label them Chevrolet doesn't make it fact. They have been wrongly calling Ford Small Block 289 & 302 V8 motors 'Windsors' for so long, many believe it to be fact.

Dr Terry.
