hi need some help and sorry if question has been asked . i want to put an Auto gearbox into my HG 253 and also hook up the column shift again as the previouse owner cut a hole in the floor . what auto gearbox will bolt on and whats the best i only drive it once a month around sydney . thx

I would say Trimatic, depending on preference, aftermarket floor shifter can be used or go back to column shift. Cost effective & simple install.

yes its an easy swap.

i have auto columns available if needed & in most colours, & also all th linkages you'l need

yes trimatic is yor best option, but make sure its a right hand shift type from HG or HQ - WB.

as commodore ones are all left shift, they wont suit column shift

i'll be driving up to sydney tuesday & going home wed midday if you need anything delivered

has anyone ever successfully modified a column shift linkage to suit commodore trimatic? or will i be the first? i've got an early v8 tri suiting rebuild or a race prepped bob grant automatics tri from a vc ready to go. i know what i want to use

you could by using a HJ-X Statesman factory T400 column auto set up - which runs across the pan to the passenger side.. you would have to modify a little bit..
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

It'd be easier to get the trimatic swapped to RH shift.

Probably, as pretty much anything can be done.
Would it be worth the bother? Probably not.

Not really. But replace the 4spd with an aussie 3spd and it'll work fine.

some old nissans had 4spd on the coloum

There were quite a few older cars which had a 4-sp on the column, but the gearbox was designed to make this happen.

The problem with the Aussie 4-sp is that the reverse lever is on the left-hand side of the box.

Having said that, I have seen one fitted. The guy connected the two 3-sp rods from the column to give the 4 forward speeds & had a small lever poking thru the floor for reverse.

A bit agricultural, but it worked.
