Hi guys, I am after some hints and tips on how to install the new inner and outer door belt strips I just bought for the HG panelvan.

I got the old ones out easy enough, but I am breaking some clips when trying to install the new ones. I have been trying to push them in with a screwdriver from the top.

Can someone please descibe the best way to install these, The ones I have came from Rares. Do I need to squeeze the clips down a bit and do they need any glue at all.

Cheers and thanks for any help here at all

Do you have the glass in the door?

Yes I do have the glass in the door. But I guess by the way you have asked that question, its got to come out before I break something else.

If I take the glass out whats the best way to get those spring clips to pop in.

Thanks Mick

Well it does give you a bit more room.
I have rigged a piece of wood about 20mm thick and 150mm long with some felt on one side so as not to damage the paint, and used some of the expanding jaw pliers to squeeze the clips in one by one. I have found the ones from Rares to be a bit brittle, so I sometimes use some lube in the clips too.
Just make sure you dont bend the frame inside the rubber as it will make for a wavey look on the seal and is hard to straighten.

Well it works for me anyway.

I use this tool to pull the clips of the door belts through the holes rather than push or compress the clips to get them in.
The tool is used by windscreen fitters. It is perfect to use for the door belts. With the belts in place, the clips will only just poke through the locating slots in the doors. Hooking the tip of the tool into the tiny clips from behind, then twisting, draws the clips into place.

Great little tool, T&E Tools. Also made by Starret I think.

Although hard to show, this might help explain how it used with the door belt fitting. Saves the fingers! Shown is an EH inner door belt but the principle is the same.

slide hammer also works very well, as suggested by streetneat on the other forum. the rear doors on KTG need to be done with the glass IN, but still a piece of piss with the slidey and a smooth right angle in 25x3 flat, couldnt believe how easy after trying & swearing with a similar tool as pictured above

Hi lads

I'm going through the same saga at the moment. After breaking half the clips on the new strips I had to replace them with the 40yo ones off the old belts and sorted that problem. I'm stumped now with finishing the weather strips at the end where they butt up to the window belt. I assume they need to be cut to fit. Has anyone got any clues? Maybe a photo or 2?

Cheers

I've just been through this. Ended up marking the rubber and cutting the ends off, only took about 3mm off one end. Found that the rubber was interfering with the glass as the window went up & down, so (carefully) ground the rubber down with a belt sander. I found the easiest way to install the door belts was to put some vaseline on the clip and the slot in the door, then push them in with your fingers. It ain't easy, but it works. To remove the door belt, slide a screwdriver up from the door cavity, place it between the door skin and belt, near the various clips, and twist a bit. Don't try it from the top.
