Hi all restoring my 71 HQ GTS coupe (Melb Car)and was wondering if someone could shed some light on colours.

Ive asked numerous people that are somewhat knowledgeable in HQ's and each individual had different answers regarding colours of chassis, front radiator support, inner guards, boot ,underbody and so on.

My question as I'm trying to restore as close to original ( as possible ), with the inner boot, underside of body and front body engine bay this is done in warrigal black.

Is the chassis, inner guards, radiator support, all front and rear components( trailing arms, diff front end etc ) done in a different colour perhaps GMH black as they would've been produced in a different area.
If so there would be a slight variation !!

Also what black did Holden use for the bottom seal and glove box if it is different to GMH black ?

Appreciate your expertise and thank you all in advance.

I'm no expert but add my opinion to your list of opinions if it helps.

Remember each GMH plant painted them a different way for example Pagewood firewalls were nothing like Dandenong firewalls and Acacia Ridge were different again.
I dont know which plant if any painted their radiator support panels with warrigal, I bet Elizabeth didnt.

The only way to work it out is to have a good look at original untouched Dandenong built HQ GTS' and see how the firewall and boot compartment and radiator support panels were painted.
Have a look at your own car, are you sure all of those areas were gloss warrigal black and not just a coating of car-yard clear?
I can guarantee you the underbody wasnt gloss black.

It helps to create a paint plan a bit like this one and chop and change it until you're happy.
So this is an example only and you've got some homework to do.

Black full gloss
* Stripes and lower blackouts (maybe not on your 1971 car?)

Black with maybe 20% or 30% matting for 2K
* Front wheel wells upper surface only
* Firewall (probably not, I dont know)
* Radiator support panel (yeah maybe, I dont know)

Satin black
* Front control arms
* Diff and control arms
* Brake booster

Box Black / GMH Black (or just go with the satin black)
* Front chassis
* Radiator support panel (yes for a Kingswood, dont know about your car)
* Gearbox crossmember
* Horns (close enough)
* Battery tray
* Lower steering column
* Peddle assembly
* Bonnet springs
* Steering components

Medium gloss black
* Upper steering column
* Indicator stalk
* Lower dash panel
* Glove box lid
* Door frame blackouts

Low gloss (was basically an etch primer)
* Front wheel wells, under side only (over the deadener?)
* Brake master cylinder
* Grill
* Headlight surrounds (or maybe medium gloss?)

Spray deadener
* Front wheel wells, the rear 1/3 not all of it (under or over paint?)
* Rear wheel wells (under or over paint?)
* Where else?

Smokey grey low gloss black (Sample from boot compartment behind the rear seat)
* Boot compartment (unless you think it was gloss black?)
* Firewall (more than likely)
* Underbody (would look a whole lot better than gloss black)
* Rear wheel wells (over the deadener?)

Zero gloss Suede finish
* Upper dash
* A-pillar covers

And then you can add fan and pulleys, air cleaner, engine brackets, horns, radiator etc somewhere in your paint plan.
Springs may have been left in bar metal, not sure.

Good luck.

Thanks Wayne you have answered a lot of my questions. My car was definantly build in Dandong Melb 1971, and i really couldn't compare any original colours apart from the body colour left on rear parcel area and underside of roof which is spartacus blue metallic. As for the rest of the car all was re sprayed a few times during its life.
I have already sprayed out he warrigal black with a matting agent and has finished a more satin not gloss. I wasn't sure about the other stuff which you have helped me with to move forward and source a little more info. Once again thanks Wayne appreciate your input and help.

Chris I had similar issues when it came to painting my HQ Sandman and wanting to try and emulate the factory look, its very hard as even if you have a survivor car to look at its nearly 50 year old acrylic paint to try and determine if it started life as gloss, satin or low sheen as they dull over time. I have heard the stories to where something the firewalls and boot areas were spray with what was largely considered left over paints mixed with black giving a greyish tinge. I used mostly satin black, used the correct suede paint for dash and pillars and the i think from memory 80% gloss for sills blackouts etc. All good advice above and I have no doubt it was slightly different from factory to factory they would have used what they had available just like with bolts etc Good luck

Very much location and timeframe dependent too.
