Shannons Insurance Media Release

Sam’s ‘Stang Has Got to Go at Shannons

Media personality and new Melbourne Football Club 'ruck coach' Sam Newman is putting his much-loved Mustang under the hammer at the Shannons Melbourne Motor Show Auction on February 19.

Media celebrity and newly appointed ruck coach for the Melbourne Football Club, Sam Newman, is cleaning out his garage.

Not too much, mind you. Just enough to replace his current 1965 Ford Mustang convertible with a later 1967 model currently being restored.

Shannons will put Newman’s beautiful light gold, cruiser with its gold and cream interior under the hammer at the Melbourne International Motor Show Auction on Sunday February 19.

His Mustang ‘hand-me-down’ is a stunning 289 V8 left hand drive model fitted with all the desirable Pony car options, such as automatic transmission, a power roof and power steering.

Newman is an unapologetic car enthusiast and he bought the car about 18 months ago to enjoy while his new project – a 1967 Mustang GTA convertible – was being restored.

In the interim he couldn’t help himself and went through the Mustang from stem to stern, re-working the engine, replacing the folding roof and fitting uprated suspension, stylised wheels and optional GT driving lights.

“It’s been a great car,” said Newman. “It’s my first Mustang and although I originally bought it to tide me over until the new car was finished, I’ve fallen in love with it. I’ll be very sorry to see it go, but I have only so much garage space.”

Shannons say Sam’s ‘Stang is a credit to him and one of the best of its model available. They expect it to sell for between $45,000 and $55,000 on its own merits, rather than its owner’s celebrity status.

While Sam Newman is ‘Going for Gold’ at the Melbourne Motor Show, Shannons are going for ‘Silver’, with the Motor Show auction marking the 25th year of Shannons auctions since the first in December 1981.

A total of around 125 car, motorcycle and memorabilia lots will be featured in the Shannons Motor Show Auction on Sunday February 19.

All items will be on display free to the public in the Concourse area of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre through the Show from February 9-19.
