I have one for you all, and hope to get an answer to one also.
(1) When did GMH first use Nylock Lock nuts on vehicles?
(2) Who invented the Locknut, and sold the patent to Ajax Fasteners?
A clue here is, he's Australian. |

I'm not sure when the first Nylocs appeared, was it the late 60s ?
When you say Locknut, do you mean the practice of tightening 2 nuts together, this has been around since the 1800s. Or is there a patent for a device like a Nyloc ?

They were invented in 1951, but did not have a Nylon insert in them at this time. They were originally designed with a spring metal insert. I would definately like to know when they first appeared on a Holden.
As for the Patent - sure it was patented, and Ajax Fasteners bought it out in 1955 and paid a good sum of money on it. How I know..... My Grandfather was the inventer. |

| i believe ajax are still manufacturing that style or atleast a modern version of that nut now, have never seen one on a holden or ford though |

The only locknuts (or "loosening preventing" type nuts) I know of in Commodores are the ones like those fitted to the brake booster/firewall mount, which are crimped in 3 places around the perimeter.
I haven't seen a nyloc or spring steel type locknut in one, but I have used thousands, if not hundreds of thousands in my working life, and on lots of DIY projects. |

| Yes Mick - I know the type you refer to on the Brake Booster, what about Drive shaft uni's, and backing plates? |

| Actually, I think you're right on the B/W diffs used from VL (well, some VK onwards) through to VT. They have 4 bolts & possibly (I'd have to double check) 4 nyloc nuts where the 2 flanges join together. |
