What are the main differences in front stub axles and hubs for the following Commodore standard type sedans, not Crossover or Adventura. Are they interchangeable?
Will big 343mm VZ brakes fit on a VR? (assuming the wheels are big enough)

OK, there are a lot of answers here, maybe a few others could help here.
AFAIK the hubs are basically the same (offset, PCD etc.) except for 2 things. The VR/VS rotors have a smaller hole centre by around 1.5mm. Also there are many variations in the tooth count for the ABS sensor. If your not using ABS don't worry about that bit. RH & LH hubs are different to each other, although some aftermarket units are LH/RH same.
The other problem from memory is that the spring saddle on the strut is higher up from mid-VS onwards, allowing for larger diameter wheel & tyre combinations. The largest wheel in those days was 15 x 7. It was the the VS series II which had the first 16-inch wheel (except for HSV). The struts themselves are interchangeable, so any newer replacement items will have the higher saddle.

On VR onwards the hub assembly includes the stub axle, flange & bearing as a one-piece non-serviceable item. I'm not sure what they call the piece it bolts to; maybe it's called the upright. AFAIK they remained unchanged for VR to VZ except, as you say, the AWD versions.
I do know that the upper section (the Chapman strut) is interchangeable for those model series.

The VR/VS front hubs interchange with each other (as long as you have the right one out of the 3 types to suit your vehicle - non abs / abs live axle / abs/irs).
VT onwards hubs are different in their bolt pattern to the VR/VS ones, and don't interchange.
I had someone tell me the other day that they think there's an aftermarket hub that's multi-fit, that can do VR-VZ fronts (obviously not AWD models), but I have not seen this myself, and the problem I have accepting this, is that VR/VS have a 70.5mm spigot, while VT-VZ have a 72mm one. This says to me that if you could use such a multi-fit hub, then it won't allow the VR/VS rotor to fit, or it will be the smaller spigot, making it unsuitable for VT-VZ. |

Thanks guys. I have learnt the name of the parts now.
Steering knuckle and hub and disc together makes a steering, rolling and braking unit as say a HQ stub axle and wheel bearings and disc does |
