Car Safety Centre gets a very Royal award

The Volvo Car Safety Centre has been selected by The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards as winner of its category "Vehicle Driver and Passenger Safety Award". It is the sixth time that the honour of being awarded by the Prince Michael Road Safety Awards has been bestowed on Volvo Car Corporation.

This prestigeous category is won by the individual, organisation or company whose product, technical innovation, technological concept, system experimental project, vehicle or component is judged to have made the most significant contribution to the safety of vehicle occupants.

The actual award was presented to Volvo Cars at a visit to the Volvo Car Safety Centre by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

"Volvo has huge competence when it comes to safety. I have never seen anything else on the scale of the Volvo Car Safety Centre," said His Royal Highness, after watching a full-scale two-car crash at the facilities in Gothenburg.

The Prince Michael Road Safety Awards were originally established in 1987 on His Royal Highness’ initiative in order to give public recognition to those who improved road safety in Great Britain. This year the first international Awards have been made in order to recognise achievements and innovations world-wide.

The Awards are sponsored by the British Standards Institution and Volvo Cars has been awarded six times including this year:

  • 2000 The Volvo Car Safety Centre
  • 1998 The Inflatable Curtain of the Volvo S80
  • 1997 The Volvo S40/V40
  • 1994 The SIPS Bag (Side Impact Protection System) Volvo 850
  • 1990 The Integrated Child Booster Cushion (Volvo 960)
  • 1989 The Mechanical Seat Belt Pre-tensioner
