Injury protection wins SAE Excellence Award

A world-leading Holden safety project that focuses on injury protection in side impact collisions has received the Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia 2000 Automotive Excellence Silver Award.

Presenting the award, John Modra of Industry Victoria said the judging panel was particularly impressed by the benefits the Holden project is bringing to Australia in terms of harm reduction, which is expected to amount to many millions of dollars.

The side impact protection project, involving years of original research and computer-optimised engineering development, has led to design improvements in the current Commodore and will lead to further improvements in the future.

According to Laurie Sparke, Holden's manager of advanced engineering, who accepted the SAE award, side impact collisions in Australia cause one billion dollars of harm to the community each year and represent a serious public health issue.

The 2000 Automotive Engineering Excellence Awards are designed to recognise excellence in engineering, design and quality with the aim of raising the standards and public perception of the Australian automotive industry.
