Swedish delights at Sydney show

Volvo’s sensational new S60 sedan will go on public display for the first time in Australia at the Sydney International Motor Show, opening at Darling Harbour on November 17th.

It will be joined by the Australian Federal Police’s very own V70 T5 – fully decked out with police signage, emergency lights and sirens. Inside, the car is fitted with a high-tech police communications system and a speed detection radar and laser. Australian Federal Police Officers will be on hand during the Show to demonstrate the equipment.

Staff and dealers on the Volvo stand will be modeling the Volvo Ocean Race Collection of clothing and footwear. The exclusive, high quality clothing range, manufactured by Musto, and dubarry premium quality sailing and leisure shoes will also be on sale, as will S60 remote control race cars.

Waiting for the S60…
S60_01.jpg (28810 bytes)Volvo’s introduction of the new S60 sedan is a dynamic step forward, combining inspired styling, sophisticated design and forceful driving performance to arouse interest from younger buyers - those traditionally attracted to German marques.

Lighter and shorter than either the S80 sedan and the V70 wagon, with which the S60 shares its platform and suspension, the nimble Volvo was designed and developed from the start to appeal to the driving enthusiast and younger buyer.

The S60 will be on sale in Australia during January 2001, priced as follows:

Styling and design
The new sport-minded S60 uniquely blends the graceful roof line of a coupe with the generous interior space of a sedan and takes traditional Volvo values such as safety and comfort to high levels of dynamic excitement. The S60 is available in three model variants – separated by a choice of three engine performance levels.

All three engines are Volvo’s recently improved and refined RN five-cylinder petrol engines - naturally aspirated and turbocharged.

S60 2.4 20V
Naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre DOHC 20 valve five-cylinder engine with CVVT (continuously variable valve timing on the intake camshaft) developing 125kW at 5900rpm and 230Nm at 4500rpm. Fuel consumption figures for city/highway are 9.3L/100km and 6.1L/100km (manual) and 10.0L/100km and 6.1L/100km (automatic).

S60 2.4T
Light-pressure turbocharged 2.4-litre DOHC five-cylinder engine with CVVT (on the exhaust camshaft) developing 147kW at 6000rpm and 285Nm between 1800-5000rpm. Fuel consumption figures for city/highway are 9.9L/100km and 6.4L/100km (manual) and 10.3L/100km and 6.9L/100km (automatic).

S60 T5
High-pressure turbocharged 2.3-litre DOHC five-cylinder engine with CVVT (on the exhaust camshaft) developing 184kW at 5200rpm and 330Nm between 2500-5200rpm. Fuel consumption figures for city/highway are 10.1L/100km and 6.5L/100km (manual) 10.6L/100km and 6.5L/100km (automatic).

Cog-swapping
A five-speed automatic gearbox is available across the three model S60 range as a standard feature with Geartronic manual sequential shift on the S60 T and T5.

A sporty five-speed manual shift gear lever – the Spaceball – with alloy finish is available to customers ordering manual transmission (standard on T5, optional on other variants) and is priced at $390.

Volvo Navigational System (VNS) will be standard on the new S60 T5 and optional on the S60 2.4 20V SE and S60 2.4 T. The system is based on a GPS navigator and a CD containing detailed maps. VNS highlights the most direct route to a given destination via a voice activated 5" colour screen, hidden in the instrument panel until needed. Directions to the nearest hotel, petrol station, parking station, restaurant or tourist attraction are also on hand.

The S60 2.4 20V meets the strict ULEV emission standards and the European emission requirements for 2005. The turbocharged engines, T and T5, meet the LEV level.

Cross Country
V70 CrossCountry_01.jpg (28990 bytes)Volvo’s new all-wheel-drive Cross Country also makes its Australian debut at the Sydney International Motor Show.

For the day to day, Volvo’s Cross Country wagon is well provisioned with comfortable, supportive seats, excellent visibility and a 147kW 2.4-litre low-pressure turbocharged engine and choice of five-speed manual or automatic transmission (with Geartronic sequential shift available as standard on the Cross Country SE). The Cross Country is as comfortable and as safe to drive in town as a luxury wagon.

Then on the weekend, with all-wheel-drive, 200mm of ground clearance, and an advanced computer-activated traction control system, is more than capable of traversing Australia’s rugged roads to reach destinations wherever there is a road of some kind.

Car-like drivability, excellent handling, safety, better fuel consumption, load carrying, excellent over-traffic visibility, driving comfort and a certain ruggedly unique styling are all reasons why adventure vehicles like the Volvo Cross Country attract both car and traditional 4WD buyers. The Volvo Cross Country takes qualities from each to offer the best of both worlds.

In Australia the Cross Country is offered in two option levels; Cross Country and the Cross Country SE.

Visual cues that mark the entry-level Cross Country are steel wheels, roof rails without cross-bars and robust and good-looking textile upholstery.

The Cross Country SE acquires heated front seats, comfort features such as leather upholstery, adjustable driver’s seat, active carbon cabin air filter, and a nine-speaker Dolby sound system with four-disc in-dash CD player.

The Cross Country SE is further upgraded with 16x7-inch alloy wheels (with full-size steel spare wheel), rear mudflaps and reinforced roof rails with cross-members.

Because the Cross Country satisfies import criteria as a 4WD, it will be imported into Australia at the lower 4WD import duty. The Cross Country will be competitively priced at $61950 (manual) and $63950 (auto), and the Cross Country SE is priced at $69950 (manual) and $71950 (auto).

For a limited time, the Cross Country Plus Package of leather upholstery and alloy wheels is available for the introductory price of $2000.
