In South Australia, Solitaire Automotive will assume the role of sole Volkswagen representative in the state. Building on its seven year relationship with the German car and commercial vehicle maker, Solitaire will open a state-of-the-art car and commercial vehicle dealership dedicated to Volkswagen early in 1998.

This will be matched in Perth by the John Hughes Corporation, which will add Volkswagen to its existing highly successful 'Skipper' dealerships with an all-new dealership for Volkswagen in Victoria Park.

Both dealerships will offer dedicated sales and service departments to support Volkswagen's unique range of cars and commercial vehicles, which already includes Europe's best selling car, the Golf, the class leading Polo and the world's best selling commercial van, the Transporter.

With new models, such as the Passat, Caddy and LT due to arrive in 1998, followed by the launch of the fourth generation Golf and the eagerly awaited New Beetle in 1999, Volkswagen is investing heavily in its Australian dealer network.

Its Australian importer, Inchcape Motors Australia, aims to have its dealer network become a benchmark for customer service, to match the benchmark in automotive ability already set by Volkswagen products.

"With our car sales up 78 per cent this year and commercial vehicles up 26 per cent, Volkswagen has become one of the most sought-after franchises in Australia," says Ewan Ramsay, Managing Director for Volkswagen in Australia.

"The fact that some of Australia's leading car retailers are prepared to make multi-million dollar investments in Volkswagen amply demonstrates the industry's belief that Volkswagen is returning to being, and will remain, a significant player in the Australian car market."
