Records tumble down in July

TOYOTA has set more sales records in July, further consolidating its lead in the national vehicle sales race for the year.

According to industry statistician VFACTS, Toyota sold 15,507 vehicles last month, an all-time July record for the company, which now comfortably leads its nearest rival Holden by 4,613 sales for the year-to-date.

"Competition for sales victory this year is spirited and we don't underestimate our competitors in a very active market," said the senior executive vice-president of Toyota Australia, John Conomos.

"We are confident, however, that the breadth and quality of our vehicle line-up - and the value that they represent - will continue to attract buyers in record numbers.”

Five Toyota models set sales records last month.

New-generation Prado continued its record run, its sales of 1,342 beating the previous best for the month by 72.5 percent.

Echo was the best selling model in the light car segment, its sales of 1,405 exceeded the previous best July by 29 percent.

LandCruiser 100 Series wagon enjoyed its best July since 1984 with sales of 1,163 (up 18.2 percent).

HiLux 4x2 was up 25.8 percent on its previous best for July, while HiLux 4x4 (1,218) was up 3.7 percent.

In addition, Corolla (3,089) and RAV4 (923) recorded their second best ever results for the month.

Overall it was the best July ever for Toyota commercial vehicle sales, beating the record set last year by 21.5 percent.

"Commercial vehicle sales continue to defy any suggestion of an economic downturn," said Mr Conomos.
