Australia’s most prestigious motoring organisation awards have named Toyota LandCruiser as best all-terrain four-wheel-drive.

Toyota has now won a total of 19 NRMA Best Car awards, more than any other marque. 1999 is the first time the nation’s largest motoring organisations have jointly determined their annual car awards.

Each model was judged against 18 criteria, then grouped into three broad areas assessing value for money, design and function, and on-road vehicle performance.

The NRMA and RACV recognised LandCruiser’s off-road abilities and reliability.

"Though exceptionally tough, the LandCruiser is also very refined and civilised," the NRMA/RACV reported.

"The LandCruiser 100 Series will still be dust-proof and rattle-free after many a hard slog in the bush.

"Safety also rates highly in the GXL model. It has anti-lock brakes, dual front SRS airbags, and the body and chassis have impact-absorbing areas similar to those on sedan vehicles."

The NRMA/RACV combined for the first time through the Awards to provide a consumer-focused guide to the best vehicles on the market.
