Cypact coupe : concept futuretech for the IT generation

Nissan’s Cypact concept coupe has made its Australian debt at the Sydney International Motor Show.

Cypact.jpg (24262 bytes)Headlining a range of new technologies designed to reduce the impact of motor vehicles on the environment, the sporty Cypact coupe also uses an array of IT systems, notably multimedia information and communications capabilities, to enhance driver performance and safety.

It is likely the Cypact will be powered by a turbo-diesel powerplant under development by Nissan to achieve the super fuel-efficient "3-litre car" concept in Europe. The 3-litre car is one that emits no more carbon dioxide than 90g/km, which is the equivalent to consuming 3.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kms or approximately equal to driving 30 kms on a litre of fuel.

Designed for the IT generation, Cypact features an interface for connecting a mobile PC. With this system, drivers can map out a travel plan at home and bring that plan aboard the car where it will be transferred into Nissan’s Stereoscopic Birdview navigation system, which is displayed in the Cypact on a wide 7-inch in-dash monitor.

Once the driver determines his destination, the system:

  • Searches for the best route based on latest map information,
  • Gathers interesting tourist information,
  • Provides information on traffic conditions, crowds, weather etc,
  • Downloads relevant information from the internet,
  • Creates animated navigation guides with voiced instructions,
  • Provides voiced output of incoming e-mail, and
  • Provides voiced control of outgoing e-mail.

Another IT-based feature which delivers enhanced safety is an emergency call system, which automatically notifies an operations centre of an emergency situation based on detection of deployment of the airbags.

Cypact’s compact, sporty looks combine a dynamic arch-shaped form, chiselled, three-dimensional body sides and placement of the wheels at the outermost four corners of the car for a functional road package. A high waistline gives the car a substantial look when viewed from the side and U-shaped parting lines front and rear provide a sporty yet somewhat endearing look.

Inside, a blue and white colour scheme was chosen as it portrays cleanliness. Instruments are laid out with an emphasis on functionality, simplicity and open design.

Sports-look speedo, tachometer and fuel gauge are independent but inside the speedo is a fuel consumption gauge strategically positioned to encourage eco-friendly driving habits.

The control switches for the navigation system and audio equipment are positioned for easy operation in the triangular-shaped center console panel. Also located in this simple yet distinctive panel is the switch for accessing the Compasslink information service, card holder for the electronic toll collection system and other IT devices.

A 7-inch monitor which affords superior visibility is positioned directly above the control panel in the centre of the dashboard.

With the Cypact, Nissan aims to solve today’s motoring paradox by combining a dynamic and enjoyable driving experience with a so-called 3-litre super economy engine for substantially reduced environmental impact compared with conventional sports cars.
