Mitsi sends Henry packing in WA

For the first time in its history, Mitsubishi has outsold Ford in Western Australia, and Mitsubishi’s WA manager Phil Noble believes the trend is likely to continue.

Figures from industry statistician VFACTS show Mitsubishi sales in WA were some 40 units ahead of Ford in October, putting the Adelaide-based company firmly into the top three behind Toyota and Holden.

"We started the chase about four months ago, when Ford were ahead by around 250 vehicles a month," said Mr Noble.

"We reeled them in at the rate of about 50 a month. Then our record October performance shot us right past.

"It’s a very pleasing result and we expect to widen the gap in coming months."

Mr Noble put Mitsubishi’s spectacular sales down to increased marketing, value for money products and dealer dedication.

"The Lancers, at $17,990 for the coupe and $19,990 for the 1.8 litre sedan, drive-away and including air-conditioning, are top value," he said.

"Mirage sales went up 300 percent with the $14,990 drive-away with air promotion and the new TJ Magna has been very well received

"The stronger, sporty image has made it a winner and we now have a special edition Solara at $29,990 which includes more than $5000 in extra equipment.

Mr Noble said the WA dealer network, which employs more than 900 people, is extremely enthusiastic.

"We’re committed to WA and to Australia," he said. "We’ve overtaken one of the former big three here and we intend to grow our market and our future in WA."

The three-diamond brand is glowing brightly elsewhere, too. Mitsubishi marketing staff have just returned from the Middle East, where considerable interest was shown in the Magna.

A Mid-East delegation will visit the Adelaide plant next month to initiate export orders, and early next year the Mitsubishi marketers will head to the USA to strengthen exports of the Verada, which is sold there as the Diarnante.
