Accord judged `most stable’ in US rollover study

The Honda Accord has become the first vehicle to receive a five-star rating in a rollover resistance study by the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

All vehicles were given a rating between one and five stars, with five stars representing a rollover risk of less than 10 per cent. Vehicles rated with one star had a rollover risk greater than 40 per cent.

Sport utility vehicles fared the worst with just one star but all other passenger cars, including the Honda Civic sedan, received a four-star rating - even the Odyssey people mover.

The rankings are based on static stability – a measure of the vehicle’s centre of gravity and track width – and are designed to help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.
