Ford has announced recommended
retail pricing for the new 1998 model range of
its successful Explorer 4x4 wagon, as unveiled at
the recent Sydney Motor Show.Reductions of up to $3000 coincide
with increased standard equipment levels,
functional improvements and cleaner rear styling
across all models.
The lowest priced model,
the XL manual, drops $2000 to $39,990 whilst
gaining Securilock anti-theft engine
immobilisation, cruise control, an additional
console at the base of a more ergonomically
positioned gearlever, longer life self-adjusting
clutch with a lower and lighter feel pedal, plus
a leather wrapped rim and tilt adjustment on its
steering wheel.
The XL automatic is
$42,990, $1700 less than previously.
The volume selling XLT
automatic Is down $2700 to $46,990 and is now
equipped with Securilock, 16" new design
alloy wheels with bigger P255/70 tyres (replacing
15"/235/75s) and in early 1998 shipments
remote keyless entry.
A very small number of new
model manual XLTs will be available at $43,990,
$3000 less than the prior model, before this
model is discontinued.
The luxury, leather
trimmed, active suspension Explorer Limited stays
at $59,990 and gets Securilock and 16"
wheels of new unique design with bigger P255/70
tyres.
Other new features on all
1998 Explorers include Throttle Position Sensing
in '4x4 Auto' mode which increases torque to the
front wheels when accelerating hard on slick
surfaces, more front seat lumbar support,
freshened XL and XLT seat trim designs,
recalibrated anti-skid brakes (ABS) and steering,
darker solar-tinted side and rear glass, better
cabin ventilation and an interior light linked
battery saver feature.
All Explorers have twin
airbags, ABS, rear LSD and Ford's unique
Controi-Trac 4wd traction control system. Seating
for seven is available in XL and XLT with fitment
of an accessory folding third row seat.
Recommended retail prices
for 1997-plated Explorers still in Ford dealer
stocks will rollback to align with the '98
models.
